Obituary for Garland Gwynn Carter
Garland Gwynn Carter, 73, former long time resident of Hollis, passed away Thursday, September 21, 1995, in Baylor Hospital in Grapevine, Texas. Services have been scheduled for 2 pm Sunday at the Thomas Street Church of Christ with Jack McKeown officiating. Interment will follow in the Tipton Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

Garland was born November 7, 1921, in Vinson, Oklahoma the son of the late Grady and Nora (Nell) Carter. Mr. Carter was a veteran of World War II having been a paratrooper with the US Marine 5th Division. From March of 1943 until November of 1945, he served in the Pacific Theater. During a Stateside leave, Garland married Imojean Chambers in Cleburne, Texas on March 5, 1944. He was wounded in February of 1945 at Iwo Jima and received the Purple Heart. After returning to the United States, Garland farmed in the Hollis area for 20 years. He later operated the Shamrock Service Station in Hollis until his retirement in 1991 and was a faithful member to the Hollis Church of Christ. He was a member of the VFW and moved his letter to the Thomas Street Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife Imojean Carter of Grapevine, Texas; children, Karen Redelsperger and husband John of Altus, Oklahoma; James Carter and wife Wanda of Southlake, Texas; Jerry "Skipper" Carter and wife Linda of Southlake, Texas; 8 grandchildren, John Paul of Enid, Oklahoma, Jay Mark, Jim Bob, Joe Don Redelsperger of Altus, Oklahoma; Amy and Jeni Hilliard of Southlake Texas; Lauren and Kristen Carter of Southlake, Texas.

Preceded in death by parents, one brother, Doyle Carter.
