Gary Dale Smith, age 60, of Mangum, passed away Monday morning, November 25, 2013, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital, in Altus.
Mr. Smith was born in Goodlett, Texas on March 17, 1953, to Junior and Melba (Lumpkin) Smith. Moving to Vinson, as a small child, they moved to Mangum, when Vinson School closed, and he graduated with the Mangum class of 1972. On December 31, 1969, he married the love of his life, Sandra Hilley, and they spent the next forty-three wonderful years together before his death. Gary spent thirty-one years working for the City of Mangum, the last several as street superintendent until poor health forced his retirement in 2008. Having a private pilot"s license, Gary loved flying. He also loved working with his dad, doing custom harvesting, fishing and caring for animals.
Preceded in death by his father, he is survived by his wife Sandra, of Mangum; his mother, Melba Baker and husband James, of Mangum; three children, Sharie Mitchell and husband Junior of Mangum, Justin Smith of Mangum and Danica Birdwell and husband Theodore of Duke; six grandchildren, Health Mitchell and wife Eileen of Willow, Elissa Mitchell of Mangum, Jared Mitchell and wife Brooke of Willow, Kaitlyn Mitchell of Mangum, John Clayton Birdwell of Duke and Caleb Birdwell of Duke; one sister, Karen Coulter and husband Scott of Elk City; two brothers, Kevin Smith of Mangum and Randy Smith of Mangum along with many other relatives and friends.
In keeping with Gary"s wishes, he will be cremated and a memorial service will be held in the near future with a date to be announced.
