Obituary for George Andrew Kirkland
George Andrew Kirkland, 79, of Altus, passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at Plantation Village Nursing Home.
George was born December 23, 1932, in Crenshaw County, Alabama, to Louis and Willie (Hollis) Kirkland. He married Wanda Loftis July 22, 1954, in Altus. She preceded him in death May 15, 2012.
He graduated from Dozier High School in Dozier, Alabama, in 1952. George received numerous college scholarship offers to play football. He chose Troy State in Troy, Alabama, but decided to serve his country during the Korean Conflict in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1953. George came to Oklahoma in 1954 where he met his future bride. He drove a truck for Republic Gypsum in Duke for many years before his retirement. George actively worked up to the age of 73.
Preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Wanda, one sister, Ruth Pinkston, and an infant brother, Ray, George is survived by two daughters, Kay Callen and her life partner, Kendall Payne, of Altus, and Pam Smith and husband Danny, also of Altus; granddaughters, Jennifer Lechuga and children Andrew and Brooke of Altus, Jaclyn Kendall and husband Jeremy and their children Jayli and J.J., all of Mangum, Emily Jones and husband Chris and their children Abigail and Jozie of Altus, Oklahoma; two sisters, Faye Norris of Opp, Alabama, and Joyce Clark of Titusville, Florida; several nieces and nephews in Alabama and Florida; and his special caregivers, Shakera Shivers, Jess Miller, Alex Smith, Nia Pliar, Amber Fish, Ryan Sadler, Clara Herd, and "Ms. Domney", all of Altus. George also had two lifelong friends, Wayne Merrill, of Opp, Alabama, and Jerry Stephens, of Gould, Oklahoma.
The family would like to especially thank the Plantation Village staff for their wonderful care during the time that George lived with them.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 23 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
Graveside Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 24, 2012, at the Altus City Cemetery with Chaplain Erin Martinez and Reverend Jim Jones officiating.
