Georgia Elmeda Payne,"Meda" age 75, of Altus, passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2014, in Houston, Texas.
Elmeda was born in Altus, Oklahoma on August 8, 1939, to George and Martha (Spraggins) Olson. After attending Victory School and graduating from Altus High in 1957, she completed her bachelor"s degree at Oklahoma State University. Moving back to Altus, Elmeda began working with Civil Service at Altus Air Force Base and later taught school for a short time at Duke. After teaching, Elmeda began working at the Duke Post Office and later retired as the Duke Postmaster, serving with the US Postal Service for over twenty five years. On January 31, 1964, she married Ira Laverne "Buck" Payne and they were married for forty-one years before his death on May 22, 2005. After her retirement from the postal service, Elmeda worked part-time at Western Oklahoma State College and ACMI House. Very active in the Duke First United Methodist church, she served as church secretary, Lay Leader, and organist. Additionally she was the organist for Highland Heights Methodist Church. Very musically talented, Elmeda played the piano, organ and accordion. Elmeda taught accordion at Hubbard School of Music for a time and enjoyed sharing her musical talent. She was also an active and founding member of the 21st Century Club of Duke. Most of all, Elmeda enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and son Darrin Payne, she is survived by one son, Duane Payne and wife Tara of Victoria, Texas; three grandchildren, Bailey Payne, Cole Payne and Jake Payne; one sister, Mary Jacobs of Windthorst, Texas; two brothers, Jim Olson and wife Carol of Willis, Texas and Phil Olson and wife Glyna of Altus, along with special nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services for Elmeda Payne will be at 2 p.m., Friday, December 5, 2014, at the Duke First United Methodist Church with Pastor Micah Welcher officiating. Interment will follow at the Victory Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.
The family will greet friends on Thursday, from 6 until 7 p.m., at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
