Glenn Hal Sullivan was born in Altus, Oklahoma, the Friendship Community, December 2, 1935, to Clois R. Sullivan and Ola Mae (Curley) Sullivan. He passed away March 4, 2016, on the Sullivan Farm in the Friendship Community. His great grandfather and grandfather bought the farm when they moved from Missouri and the farm has been in the Sullivan family for over 100 years. They farmed cotton, Dairy cows, hogs and raised vegetables, etc. for the family. Glenn was the oldest of five children. He graduated from Friendship High School in 1954; he attended Cameron University and received an Associate"s Degree graduating in 1956. He attended the University of Oklahoma, but dropped out for lack of funds. He went to Southern California and obtained a job with the Orange County California Road Department. Everyone told him that he would never come back to Oklahoma and finish his degree but he was determined to get an education. Glenn returned to Oklahoma University and majored in Civil Engineering graduating January 1960. He received a Fellowship to obtain a Masters Degree in Sanitary Engineering graduating in January 1961. Glenn married Lavita Joy Cain May 30, 1959, in Oklahoma City.
After graduating from OU Glenn accepted a job with the Orange County Road Department and was a Resident Engineer. He worked for them for over 12 years counting the summers in between school semesters. During this time he wanted to get his pilot"s license so he began to take flying lessons, but postponed it when he found out he was going to be a father. In 1962 his son, Glenn Hal Sullivan II, was born and the family moved back to Norman, so Glenn could teach and obtain his Ph.D. In 1963 the family moved back to Orange County and continued to work at the Orange County Road Department. In 1966 his second son, Kenneth Cain Sullivan, was born. In 1968 Glenn and Joy decided that they were going to make a move out of California. They came back to Oklahoma and he was hired as an Assistant Director of the Oklahoma Water Resources Board (OWRB). He finally obtained his pilot"s license and flew all over the place. During this time the Oklahoma Pollution Control Board was established and Glenn was appointed Interim Director but remained with the OWRB. He later worked for the Benham Group for many years and was a water advisor for U.S. Senator Henry Bellmon. When Mr. Bellmon became governor in 1987, he appointed Glenn Secretary of Natural Resources and also Director of Tourism. In 1991 Glenn and his son, Glenn II, started the engineering firm of Glenn Sullivan and Associates, Inc. Kenny joined the firm in 1994.
Glenn grew up on the Sullivan farm and he attended the Friendship Baptist Church. He even led the singing some and sang with a good friend, Willie King. He loved the outdoors hunting, fishing, golfing, boating and being with his friends and family.
He passed from this life happy as he was on the farm and getting the old John Deere tractor ready to spray the pasture.
A favorite memory of Glenn"s was from 1954 when Friendship High School had a really good baseball team. John Pryor who was originally from Friendship Community was the baseball coach at Capitol Hill High School and his teams had not been beaten in two or three years. Coach Pryor brought his team to Friendship to play a game and the Friendship coach had to round up his team, as they were working on their family farms. Friendship beat Capitol Hill 5-0 and went on to win the Class B State Championship. Glenn was a player on the team.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Joy Sullivan; two sons, Glenn Sullivan II and wife Jennifer, and Kenny Sullivan and wife Dawn; One brother, John Sullivan and wife Stephanie; Five grandchildren, Ashley Sullivan, Cassidy Sullivan, Joe Sullivan, Thomas Sullivan, and Catherine Sullivan; three great grandchildren, Jaleigh Hudzietz, Kiefer Collins, and McKinley Collins. Glenn is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Everett Sullivan, Clarence Sullivan, and Clois William Sullivan; and one sister, Jerri Kay Gore.
Funeral services will be Thursday, March 10th, 4:00 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel, in Altus. In Lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to Sooner Swim Club, P.O. Box 1433, Norman, OK 73070, or a charity of your choice.
