Obituary for Harley Don Mathews
Harley Don Mathews was born May 6, 1933, to Don and Shirley Mathews at
their home in Carter Ok. The family of three soon moved to Mangum, establishing their lifelong home.
Harley began first grade at Edison Elementary and graduated from Mangum High School in 1951. In 1952, Harley and his buddy Mark Powell joined the navy and off they went to see the world. Harley spent his navy years on the Tender Pine Island.
After discharge Harley enrolled at Southwestern in Weatherford and received his bachelor's degree in mathematics. Harley then enrolled in the master's program at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
General Electric came calling, looking for mathematicians and musicians. This was 1961 computers were room size at the time. Thus began Harley 40 plus years as a software engineer.
Harley married Yvonne Clark in 1974. He welcomed Yvonne and her 4 daughters into his life and heart. Harley retired in 1998 and he and Yvonne moved to Mangum. Yvonne passed away in 2008.
In October 2009, Harley and Louise Price married in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. With this union lots of travel and wonderful memories were made. Harley was a lifelong Baptist and when the Presbyterian Church closed it was an easy decision to call First Baptist Church our home church.
October 1, 2015, Harley had a stroke that left him with vascular dementia, however he remained a very kind and loving man.
November 6, 2024, he suffered a broken hip and after complication entered Gloryland on Friday November 22, 2024.
Harley was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Shirley Mathews, his wife Yvonne and niece Gayla Turner.
Harley is survived by his wife Louise, his sister Jan Morris, his nephew Jim Kerbo, lifelong friend Ron Kinslow, Clark Family;Desiree, Monique, Yvette, and Denise.
Price Family Rebecca, Tyler, Melissa, and Elaine.
Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 9th, 2024 at The First Baptist Church of Mangum with Pastor Shawn Johnson officiating.
Services have been entrusted to Greer Funeral Home, Mangum, Oklahoma.
