Helen Clay (Sloan) Peyton, age 79 of Oklahoma City and formerly of Altus, passed away late Sunday evening, August 28, 2016 at her home in Oklahoma City.
Helen was born in Oklahoma City on January 24, 1937 to her parents Clayton and Evie (Higgs) Sloan. On June 1, 1956 she married Eddie Ray Peyton in Altus and they were married over 45 years before Eddie’s death in 2001. Early years in Altus, Helen worked as a secretary at the Sunset Elementary School and later worked in several state and county jobs including; the Jackson County Court Clerk’s Office, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troop M in Altus, and she then transferred to the Oklahoma City Division of the Highway Patrol where she retired. But a few years later, she went back to work for the Oklahoma State Auditor and Inspector’s Office. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Altus for many years and she was an avid Oklahoma Sooner fan.
Preceded in death by her husband Eddie Ray Peyton; her parents; her stepfather, Bob Clinkscales; and one son-in-law, Steve Smith, Helen is survived by three children, Pamela (Peyton) Smith of Moore; Perry Peyton of Moore; and Paula (Peyton) Puckett and husband Jim of Altus; two brothers, Norris Douglass Sloan and wife Mary of Amarillo; and Ronnie Clinkscale and wife Kay of Ft. Worth; one sister-in-law, Patsy (Peyton) Higgs and husband Don of Amarillo; six grandchildren, Cristy (Gilbertson) Moreno and husband Manuel of Oklahoma City; Eddie Paul Peyton and wife Tina of Moore; Jessica Smith of Moore; Desirae Peyton-Hadlock and husband Kevin of Moore; Kelcy (Puckett) Wallace and Jamie Puckett both of Altus; ten great grandchildren, Tobyn, Amanda, and Peyton Moreno; Brenda, Madison, and Leddie Ray Peyton; Lacey Smith; Alexia Willis and Briley Hadlock; and Klayton Wallace; her aunt Ethelda Higgs of Oklahoma City; many nieces and nephews, cousins, other family members, her special longtime friends, Lucretia DeVore; LaJune White; Annelle Barton; Wanda Watson; Anita Ellerbee; June Hobgood; and Donna Roberson; and the Class of 1955, Altus High.
The family will receive friends at visitation from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Thursday, September 1, 2016 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am, Friday, September 2, 2016 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Altus City Cemetery in Altus under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory, Altus, Oklahoma.
