Helen Jane Laughlin Givens passed away on February 8, 2011, in Mangum, Oklahoma, at the age of 86. She was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on April 17, 1924. She was the only child of Rowland W. and Sarah Smith Laughlin.
Helen Jane attended Classen High School in Oklahoma City, graduating in 1942. She then attended Monticello Girls" College in Alton, Illinois. After completing the program there she attended Oklahoma University, graduating in 1946. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oklahoma City, for most of her young life. After moving to Mangum, she was baptized into the First Baptist Church and was a very active member. She sang in the choir for many years.
Helen Jane married Jack M. Givens in February 1961 and moved to Mangum, Oklahoma. As a mother, she was involved with various PTA organizations. She was very active in the community and served as Greer County Republican Chairwoman during many campaigns. Most memorable was her being a "Bellman Bell". Helen Jane worked with the American Cancer Society, University Women and the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute. She was instrumental in organizing the Beautification Committee of Mangum and oversaw many improvements in the community. In 1986 she received the Outstanding Citizen Award presented by the Chamber of Commerce. Other honors were: serving on the Oklahoma Baptist University Board and the Oklahoma State Board of Education. She enjoyed the many activities and involvement through Jack"s terms with the Oklahoma State University Boards and State Farm Bureau.
Helen Jane is survived by her devoted husband of 50 years, Jack M. Givens. She is also survived by her children, Janie Cole and husband Don of Muskogee, Susan Givens of Mangum, Robert Keating and wife Sharon, Jim Keating and wife Rosemary of Oklahoma City, and Sarah Yauk and husband Paul of Buffalo, Oklahoma. There are 13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Helen Jane will be remembered by her devotion to the Lord, her love for her family and her sweet spirit. Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.
