Obituary for Henry J Smith
Henry J Smith, 84 of Reed, OK was born to eternal life on October 26, 2019, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled and unfading. He was born on this earth on June 11, 1935 in Elk City, OK to Henry and Adelia (Thompson) Smith. He attended Reed School, graduating in 1954.
On May 23, 1957, he married the love of his life, Lela Pearl Culpepper. They were blessed with 42 years together, working side by side on the farm. To this union was born two daughters, Merle Lynn and Carol Ann.
Henry’s entire life was spent farming and ranching alongside his father and father-in-law, never leaving the property on which he was raised. As a young boy he enjoyed riding his horse and hunting. He planted his first cotton crop in 1951, at the age of 16. In the 53 years that followed, he raised cotton, sorghum, wheat, mung beans, rye, guar and cattle. He retired from farming in 2004, but remained an active rancher. Henry was well respected in the community and welcomed the opportunity to mentor young men in farming practices.
He was a lifetime active member of the Sulphur Missionary Baptist Church where in August of 1949, at the age of 14, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized in the Hammock family stock pond. He loved to sing and served as song-leader for many years. He also served on the Reed Water Board.
Henry had an immense love for God, family and the land. He was proud and thankful for the fact the he was a “country boyâ€. He was proceeded in death by his parents, 16 half-brothers and sisters, his wife, Lela, a son-in-law, Keith Cumbie and one great grandson, Matthew Medlock, Jr. He is survived by his daughters, Merle McKaskle and husband Mac, of the home and Carol Cumbie and husband Tim Crall of Altus, grandsons Matthew McKaskle and wife Lisa, and Andrew McKaskle and wife Monica. Granddaughters, Sarah Peffer and husband JJ, Shannon Haenel and husband Kris, Amanda Konen and husband Bobby, Jenna Medlock and husband Matt, 12 great grandchildren: Amanda, Rio, Heather, Angela, Jake, Jamie, Luke Henry, Micah, Lela, Jaxon, Pearl and Gunner. One son by choice, Kevin Adams and his wife, Jennifer.
He lived simply, walked humbly and loved genuinely with a strong faith in God.
