Obituary for Herschel K. Vaughan
VAUGHAN
Herschel K. Vaughan, age 92, of Hollis, passed away early Thursday morning, February 17, 2011, at Colonial Manor Nursing Home.
Mr. Vaughan was born on March 17, 1918, in Silverton, Texas to John and Jessie (Kitchens) Vaughan. In 1942, he moved to Hollis, where he made his home until his death. Known to many as "Rattlesnake Man", he raised cattle, farmed, worked with Forrest Motley and for Harmon County Coop Gin, milked cows, did custom farming and loved working with horses and cattle. Besides a love for his family, he also had a love for homemade ice cream and peanut butter candy. On April 23, 1940, he married Corrine Brooks, in Tulia, Texas and they spent thirty wonderful years together until her death on October 1, 1970. He later married Faye Hubanks on September 16, 1972, and she passed away on September 14, 2000.
Herschel was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers and sisters, Mabel Welch, Veral Vaughan, Elmer Vaughan, Clara Henderson, Carl Vaughan, Irene Vardell, Cecil Vaughan and Gladys Brannon: one son, William Billy Dale Vaughan, in 1951and one granddaughter, Stephanie Smith, in 1971. He is survived by four children Cleta Smith and husband Ken of Catoosa, Oklahoma, Larry Vaughan and wife Carroll of Bali, Indonesia, Debra Norman and husband Johnny of Ardmore and Donna Campbell and husband Tom of Gould; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services for Herschel K. Vaughan will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, February 19, 2011, at the Hollis First United Methodist Church with Rev. Sally Barber and Rev. Elbert Shumaker officiating. Interment will follow at Fairmount Cemetery under the direction of Harmon County Funeral Home of Hollis.
The family will greet friends at Harmon County Funeral Home from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday, February 18, 2011.
