Ina Mae Johnson, age 90, of Mangum, passed away Monday afternoon, June 15, 2009, at her residence in Mangum.
Mrs. Johnson was born on May 9, 1919, in Barwise, Texas to William Virgil and Alma Harriet (Stroud) Powell. Moving to Jackson County in 1920, she was an outstanding basketball player that graduated from Duke School in 1938. Shortly after graduation, she married Ross Dewitt Patton on December 5, 1940, and moved to Mangum where she hoed many rows of cotton to help the family make a living. Later she moved to Amarillo, Texas where she worked for Spudnuts Donuts and Amarillo Schools. Moving back to Mangum, she married Arthur "Red" Johnson on December 24, 1971, and he preceded her in death on September 7, 1994. For the next several years she was employed at Kelly"s Laundry. Working with crafts, playing dominoes, especially the game of forty-two, and attending her grandchildren"s sporting events were some of her favorite pastimes.
Preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, four brothers, Lacy Powell, Virgil Powell, Harold Powell and James Powell; two sisters, Maurine Anderson and Juanita Walker, she is survived by two daughters, Linda Tipton and husband Jim of Mangum and Gloria Blain and husband Wylie of Mangum; two sons, Jimmie Patton of Andalusla, Alabama and Larry Patton of Amarillo, Texas; three sisters, Wynell Lankford and husband Max, Kathleen Stout and husband Fred, Barbara McKinley and husband Gayle and Noelin Powell; eleven grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Ina Mae Johnson will be at 10 a.m., Friday, June 19, 2009, at the Trinity Baptist Church with Jimmie Patton officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
