Irma Jo Byrd-Adams, 92, of Altus, Oklahoma passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at Harmon Memorial Hospital in Hollis, Oklahoma. A Memorial service will be on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church, Hollis, Oklahoma with Don Altom, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Hollis officiating. Inurnment will be at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Harmon County Funeral Home.
Irma Jo Byrd- Adams was born to William and Annie (Adams) Smiley in Altus, Oklahoma on April 21, 1923. She grew up in Altus and graduated High School in 1942 from Altus. She married Thomas Grady Byrd where they had 2 children, Don and Carol. She later married Richard Adams. Once the kids started school she went to work for Harmon County Soil Conservation and earned several awards including the Outstanding Employee Award. Jo worked there for 30 plus years before retiring. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Hollis for over 40 years where she sang in the Church Choir and was currently a member of the First United Methodist Church, Altus. Jo was also a member of the Sorosis Society and a member of the order of the Eastern Star, she enjoyed shopping, cooking, reading and was a seamstress for her daughters dresses while growing up.
She was preceded in death by both of her husbands; a brother, Bill Smiley; a sister, Sina Lou Smiley and a grandson, John Paul Connell.
Survivors include a son, Don Byrd of Hollis; a daughter Carol Ann and husband William Connell of Dallas; 2 grandchildren, Brenton Byrd and wife Whitney of Lowell, Arkansas and Christopher Connell of Phoenix, Arizona; 4 great grandchildren, Braydon, Maxwell, Ethan and Ali; a brother, Jack Smiley and wife Velma of Altus and many other relatives and friends.
