J. O. "Poppy" Self, 74-year-old longtime Blair, Oklahoma resident, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2019 at his home in Blair.
J.O. was born in Olustee, Oklahoma on July 2, 1944 to his parents Raymond James Self and Velma Mae (Robinson) Self. At an early age J.O.'s family moved to Blair, Oklahoma where J.O. was a proud graduate of the Class of 1962 from Blair High School. Shortly after high school on February 7, 1964 J.O. married Linda Gifford at the First Baptist Church in Blair and they have enjoyed over 55 years of marriage together. J.O. worked as a lineman and repairman for the Southwestern Bell Telephone company for many years. Later he went to work for himself in telephone repair work in residential and commercial applications, and with the local public-schools. J.O. was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Blair and he enjoyed being outdoors, camping trips, stockcar racing, riding ATV's, and he always enjoyed attending and being a part of his grandchildren's activities. But most of all, J.O. loved his family and he treasured all the time spent with family and he will be missed very much.
Preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jimmy Dale Self; daughter-in-law, Jodi Lynn Self; and his granddaughter, Jaimee Lynn Self; J.O. is survived by his wife Linda Self of the home; son, James Paul Self of Blair; daughter, Kim Self and Brian Bowden of Blair; brother, Glen Dale Self and wife Maureen of Dallas, Texas; sister, Mary Lou Soares of Indiana; three grandchildren, Kendra Downen and husband Jerry of Altus; Cheston Shaw and wife Nichole of Blair; and Jarred Self of Blair; three great grandchildren, Jaycee, Karlee, and Kason; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law; other family members and many friends.
The family will receive friends at visitation from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday evening, June 27, 2019 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, June 28, 2019 at the Blair First Baptist Church with Pastor Tyler McDowell officiating.
Interment will follow at the Blair cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory, Altus, Oklahoma.
