SMITH

James Amos Smith, age 74, of Mangum, passed away on Monday, December 28, 2009, at Mangum Community Hospital.

Mr. Smith was born on November 22, 1935, to Carl and Omega (Peeler) Smith in Vinson, Oklahoma. After graduation from Vinson School, James worked a short time in the oil industry in Texas. On June 12, 1956, he married Janie Lou Thompson. She preceded him in death on October 11, 1981. Moving back to Texas, with his employment, he later returned to Mangum in the late 1950"s where he remained until his death. A longtime mechanic, James also drove a truck and worked for Mangum Brick for a period of time. Fishing, reading and playing dominoes were activities that James enjoyed, but spending time with his family and friends was what he enjoyed most in life.

Preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers and a sister, he is survived by three sons, James Lynn Smith and wife Kim of Yukon, Randy Keith Smith and wife Sherri of Vicksburg, Mississippi and Rodney Allen Smith of Mangum; one brother, Preston Smith and wife Pat of Amarillo, Texas; five grandchildren, Megan Smith, Craig Smith, Brody Smith, Lynsey Smith and Cole Smith; his best friend, Susie Maxfield and many other relatives and friends.
