Obituary for James Clayton Conger
James Clayton Conger, age 78, of Altus, passed away early Monday morning, March 9, 2009, at Select Specialty Hospital in Oklahoma City.
Jim was born on November 23, 1930, at Prairie Hill, Oklahoma to James Harvey and Ruth (Rosser) Conger. After graduating from Victory School, west of Altus, in 1949, Jim began a long career in the concrete construction business. He worked for Stout Concrete in Altus, Pitts Concrete in Wichita Falls, Texas and later managed a concrete plant in Lawton. Moving back to Altus in 1965, Jim worked in concrete construction operations, owned and operated Altus Western Wear from 1969 until 1983, and began raising greyhounds in 1976, continuing for over twenty years. A member of the National Greyhound Association, he also loved training horses, roping calves, participating and attending rodeos and hunting coyotes. Jim loved his church and was a Sunday school teacher and director at the Friendship Baptist Church for many years. On December 23, 1954, he married the love of his life, Avanell Sexton, and they spent fifty-four wonderful years together before her death on November 29, 2002.
Preceded in death by his parents, his wife and two brothers, he is survived by one son, Jimmy Conger of Cyril, Oklahoma; two daughters, Dana Fall and husband Mike of Oklahoma City and Gina Abernathy and husband Paul of Goodland, Kansas; one sister, Dorothy Tenberg of Gonzales, Texas; six grandchildren, Kendall Conger of Garber, Oklahoma, Julie Fall of Oklahoma City, Danny Abernathy and wife Anna of Satanta, Kansas, Chris Abernathy and wife Sarah of Washington, Kansas, Erinn Abernathy of Alva, Oklahoma and Lauren Abernathy of Goodland, Kansas; six great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 11:00 am, Thursday, March 12, 2009 at the Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. Madison Clinton officiating. Interment will follow in the Navajo Cemetery under the direction of Lowell Tims Funeral Home.
