Obituary for James Harlan Stone

Long-time Mangum veterinarian, Dr. James Harlan Stone passed away on June 13, 2021. James was born in Salado, Texas on August 24, 1933 to John V. Stone and Helen (Jackson) Stone. He grew up in the Salado and Austin areas of Texas. He graduated from Lawton Public Schools in 1952 after which he joined the U.S. Marines. His military career lasted 3 years and included action in the Korean War.

Upon his return stateside, James attended Cameron College in Lawton and later transferred to Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, where he earned his doctorate degree. In August of 1957, he married Joan Fite, a union that would last 65 blissful years. A son, James David Stone, and a daughter, Jennifer Stone (Ritter), were the fruit of James’ and Joan’s dedication to one another. The couple loved being involved with young people and sponsored the annual 4-H Hall of Fame portrait for years.

James relocated from Lawton to Mangum in December of 1965 and opened a veterinary clinic that same year. James was recently named Vet of the Year by the Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Association. Although very dedicated to his work, James still managed to run a ranch and raise cattle of his own. He enjoyed traveling and collecting books about historic ranches. James was also an avid fan and supporter of his alma mater’s OSU Cowboys football team to which he held season tickets for 18 consecutive years.

He retired in 2018 after decades of helping citizens with the treatment and care of their pets and livestock. Doc’s other contributions to his community were many. He presided over the Greer County Cattlemen’s Association, was a Board Member for the Greer County Fair and served as an active deacon for over 50 years at the First Baptist Church where he was ordained. The loss of his presence, his influence and his kind advice will be felt by all.

Left to cherish the fond memory of James are his wife, Joan; his son, James David Stone; daughter, Jennifer Ritter and husband, Tommy; grandchildren, Clayton Dennis and Jessica Marshal; one great-grand-child, Abigail Marshal; as well as a host of other family members and friends.
