Obituary for James W. Farris
Denison- James W. Farris passed away March 13, 2016 at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kate and Julian Farris and his wife of 68 years, Joann Farris, as well as a brother Dale Farris who died serving his country in World War II.
Mr. Farris is survived by his children, Karen Tendle of Runaway Bay, TX, David Farris and Gennie Ammons both of Sherman, TX, along with his brothers, Don Farris, and Jay Farris and sisters Betty Droby and Judy Bingham. Mr. Farris had six grandchildren and numerous great grand children and great " great grandchildren.
Mr. Farris had an illustrious career of twenty six years in the United States Air Force during the course of which he served in the Pacific Theater in World War II. Following his retirement from the military he received a Masters Degree in Industrial Education and taught school for 10 years including building trades in Bonham, TX where he taught many of our youth how to build a house from the top to bottom.
Following his teaching career he started a small contracting business where he built numerous houses in Grayson and Fannin Counties.
He served as an advisor to the Sherman School District when they built the new high school and other projects.
After his third retirement he and several local veterans developed a plan to open a museum commemorating the history of Perrin Air Force Base. The museum through his and others efforts came to fruition and continues to function to this day.
Mr. Farris served as a deacon at the Woods Street Church of Christ for numerous years.
A memorial service honoring his life will take place on Saturday March 19, 2016 at 2pm at Woods Street Church of Christ in Sherman. In Lieu of flowers the family would be honored for those who so desire to make contribution to the Perrin Air Force Base Museum or a worthwhile charity of their choice in memory of Mr. Farris.
