Jane Sipes Prater
Jane Sipes Prater passed away Monday, August 14, 1995, at her home in Olustee, Oklahoma.
Jane was born October 19, 1921 at the "Rock House' former headquarters of t " The Cross S. ranch", south of Olustee. She was the daughter of Nellie Eddleman and Orley Sipes, pioneer, residents of Olustee. Her grandparents were Ella and L.Z. Eddleman, who came to "old Greer County" on 1881 and owned and operated the vast "Cross S. Ranch.
Jane was a graduate of Olustee High School and attended Oklahoma College for Women and the University of Oklahoma.
She was married to J.D. Prater in 1941, and moved to Stillwater where Mr. Prater was attending Oklahoma A&M and attained his Master's degree. He joined the Army Airborne Division during World War II, and Mr. Prater flew bombing missions over Germany, while Jane returned to Altus and was employed By "The Bureau of Reclamation". After the war, Mr. and Mrs. Prater returned to Stillwater and J.D. became a professor of Agronomy at Oklahoma State University.
In 1949, the Praters returned to Olustee to engage in farming operations and owned and managed Prater Grain Elevators in Olustee and Vernon, Texas.
After the death of Mr. Prater in 1973, Jane was employed by the Department of Human Services in Altus and retired in 1985. Jane was a well-known genealogist and researched family histories until her death.
Jane was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church, and an active member of the Altar Society. She was a lifetime member of "The First Families of The Twin Territories of Oklahoma", Meseum of the western Prairie, a member of the Thursday Bridge Club, The Thursday and Monday night duplicate bridge clubs. She traveled in many states participating in duplicate bridge tournaments. She was a "Life Master"
Jane was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Kay her husband, J.D., in 1973, her parents, Orley and Nellie Sipes, and a sister, Helen Sipes Lightner.
She is survived by six children, thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Prater's children are Mary Helen Arnold of California, Missouri and her children, Travis, Troy, and Lynn. Charles Prater of Edmond, Oklahoma and his children, Paul, Scott and Janice. Margaret Prater of Olustee, Oklahoma and her children Rachel and Emily. Jay Prater of Stillwater, Oklahoma and his children, Jason, Natalie and Sarah. Laura Prater of Olustee, Oklahoma and her daughter, Justine. Janet Prater of Norman, Oklahoma and her son, Harrison. The two great-grandchildren are Kayla Arnold and Kylie Windship. Her sister and brother -in-law, Mary Nell and Paul Mock of Altus, Oklahoma and her children, Harrison Mock of Dallas, Texas and Melissa Brewster of Rancho Santa Fe, California. One uncle and aunt, Robert W. and Norene Eddleman of Pilot Point, Texas. Two sister-in-laws; Kathryn Carothers, Lancaster, California and Marianne Prater, Vernon, Texas.
She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Her mortality and inner peace gave her the courageous spirit with which she faced a sudden and difficult terminal illness.
Rosary services will be at 7:00 pm Wednesday, August 16, 1995, at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Altus, Oklahoma. Funeral Mass will be at 5:30 pm, Thursday, August 17, 1995, at the Prince of peace Catholic Church, with father Tim Luschen officiating. Interment will be in the Olustee Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, Altus. Viewing will be after the Rosary Thursday evening until the time of Mass on Friday.
