Obituary for Jay Dennis Norman
J. Dennis Norman, 94, died Fathers Day, June 15, 2008 in Amarillo, Texas. Private burial will take place in the Altus City Cemetery, Altus, Oklahoma, Wednesday, June 18 at 11:30 a.m. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Tamarack Road Church of Christ, 1000 E. Tamarack Road with Brent Adams and Robert Martin of Amarillo, Texas officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, Altus, Oklahoma.
Mr. Norman was born December 1, 1913 to Evan Edgar and Wilmuth Grace Robbins Norman on a farm in Washita County near Weatherford, Oklahoma. He graduated from Weatherford High School in 1931 and received his B.S. in Math and Science from Southwestern State Teachers College in 1935. HE began his teaching career at Frederick High School where he taught two years. During that time he met Marjorie Lurine Peter, and they were married in the home of her parents on May 29, 1937. They then moved to Norman, Oklahoma where he received his Masters Degree in Biological Science from the University of Oklahoma in 1938. In August of that year, they moved to Altus, Oklahoma where Dennis taught math and biology at Altus High School. During the summer of 1961, he attended Oklahoma State University on a grant from the National Science Foundation. That same year, he was made Vice Principal of Altus High School with Cletus Street as Principal. At the death of Mr. Street, he became acting principal for the remainder of the year 1963-64. In 1964, he returned to the classroom and taught mathematics until his retirement in 1976 after forty-two years of teaching. In August, 1995, due to Mrs. Norman's failing health, the couple moved to Amarillo, Texas to be near their son Joe and his wife Sue.
His hobbies included golf, fishing, hunting, and looking for Indian artifacts. He served as elder of Park Lane and later Thomas Street Church of Christ for thirty-four years and taught the auditorium class for twenty years. He belonged to the Jackson County Retired Teachers Association and served as president of the organization one year.
His wife of fifty-nine years, Marjorie Norman; one son, Jerry Norman; his parents; three brothers, Maurice Norman, Gerald Norman and Harold Norman; and one sister, Mildred Edwards, preceded him in death.
Survivors include one son, Joe Norman and his wife Sue of Amarillo, Texas; two grandsons, Jeff Norman and his wife Jill of Edmond, Oklahoma and son John Norman and his wife Kelly or amarillo, Texas; five great-grandchildren, Jack Ryan and Sidney Marie Norman of Edmond, Oklahoma and Addison Sue, Ashley Lynn and Alexis Jo Norman of Amarillo; two sisters, Lucile Cattell and Ann Thurman of Ft. Worth, Texas; and many in-laws, nephews and nieces.
The family will be at the Hampton Inn, 3601 N. Main, while in Altus. They will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. They suggest memorials be to the High Plains Children's Home, P.O. Box 7448, Amarillo, Texas 79114.
