Obituary for Jearld Roy (Jerry) Simmons
Jearld (Jerry) Roy Simmons went to be with the Lord on May 1, 2004. Born June 5, 1938 in Princeton, IN to Hazel Pauley Simmons and Herschel Roy Simmons; he had no brothers or sisters. He graduated from Princeton High School in 1957. While in school he played in the band and often talked of the year the band marched and played at Mardi Gras in Louisiana. As a child and a young adult he was active in the Nazarene Church.
Jerry is survived by his wife Alene; one son Jason R. Simmons of Oklahoma City; one daughter, Joy R. Finch and her family; husband Jason L. Finch and their children Cheyanne R. Finch, Kaycee L. Finch, and Kayla C. Hill all of Charleston, SC; also his step-brother and his wife David & Marilyn Niehaus and their family, Andy, Greta and Matt, all of Bellevue, WA. Jerry was preceded in death by his mother, father, and step-father Leonard (Jack) Niehaus.
After 2 years of college in Evansville, IN, Jerry joined the Air Force in 1959, retiring in 1984. He was stationed in Blytheville AFB, AR, Eglin AFB FL, Ellsworth AFB SD, Kadena AFB, Okinawa and Altus AFB OK.
He met his wife Alene while stationed at Blytheville, AR. They were married March 31, 1963 at Beacon Baptist Church. He was an avid model railroader, he helped establish the model railroad club at Ft. Buckner, Okinawa, and was very proud of his HO gauge collection.
He was a member of the Headrick Baptist Church and was music director for several years. Upon retirement from the Air Force he worked on a construction crew for the railroad and also was proud of the fact that he helped turn Highway 62 into a 4-lane highway. He drove the school bus for Navajo School District and the activity bus for WOSC for several years. He was part-owner and technician for D&J's Computer Hospital.
Jerry was very concerned for the town of Headrick. During the 30 years he lived there he was a volunteer fireman, read the water meters, acted on the town council and served as both the town clerk and mayor. He was a Mason and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Funeral services for Jerry Simmons are scheduled for Thursday, May 6, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. in the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Rev Tyler McDowell officiating. Interment will follow at the Headrick Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
The family of Jerry Simmons will greet friends Wednesday evening, May 5, 2004 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
