Jerry Loce Shelby, age 85, of Altus, passed away Monday afternoon, November 30, 2015, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Shelby was born in Gould, Oklahoma on April 4, 1930, to Samuel Willice and Josie Irene (James) Shelby. After graduating from Martha High School, in 1948, he went on to attend Oklahoma A & M where he received his Bachelors Degree and his ROTC Commission. On June 23, 1953, Jerry married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Weathers, and they spent the next sixty-two wonderful years together until his death. In 1954, Jerry began his service to his country in the United States Army. For the next twenty-two years, Lt. Col Shelby was stationed at Ft. Benning, GA, Ft. Rucker, AL, Ft. Leavenworth, KS, Ft. Wolters, Texas, Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, Nuremberg Germany, two tours in Vietnam, one year in Korea, two years at the Pentagon, and retired at Ft. Sill in 1976. An accomplished helicopter and fixed wing pilot, Lt. Col Shelby, loved flying. After his retirement he began farming west of Altus and continued farming until his health failed. In his spare time, Jerry enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and golf.
Preceded in death by his parents, he is survived by his wife, Pat, of the home; two children, Ricky Shelby and wife Karla of Montague, California and Gerri Pope and husband Reese of Fruita, Colorado; two grandchildren, Ryan Pope and wife Jenseena of Murray, Utah and Jonathan Pope of Conifer, Colorado; two great granddaughters, Evelyn Isa and Lillian; two sisters, Sami Potts of Stillwater, OK and Carol Beth Haas of Martha, OK; three brothers, Dale Shelby and wife Patsy of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Don Shelby and wife Gail of Ft. Worth, Texas and Larry Shelby and wife Ginny of Cloverdale, Oregon. Numerous loving nephews and nieces. After a long illness Jerry is safely in the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Lt. Col Shelby will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Ft. Sill National Cemetery, located in Elgin, Oklahoma on Friday, December 4, 2015 at 10 a.m.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, December 4, 2015, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Doug Altom officiating. Services are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, of Altus.
