Jessie H. Reynolds, 94, of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away Tuesday,Jessie H. Reynolds, 94, of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Plantation Village Nursing Home in Altus.

Jessie was born September 29, 1917, in Headrick, Oklahoma, to Warren and Farrie (King) Howard. Jessie was the fourth of five children. She attended all twelve years in the two story brick building of the Friendship School. She graduated in May of 1937. Jessie attended Altus Junior College from 1937 to 1940. She then graduated from Oklahoma A & M with a B.S. in Education in 1942 and an M.S. in Vocational Home Economics in 1946. Jessie married Roy Johnson Reynolds on June 7, 1947, at her parents' home in the country near Headrick. Reverend R.B. Thomas was the minister. They had no children of their own, but she absolutely loved her nieces and nephews and many, many school children. Jessie taught school for 33 years in the Checotah School System. She loved to read, sew, cook (homemaking in general), and music. Her talent was playing the piano and violin.

Jessie's husband Roy passed away September 28, 1977, in Muskogee Veterans Administration Hospital after a long illness at the age of 68. Jessie decided to move back home to Altus on January 4, 1986. She started volunteering in 1987 and was still at it until her health started to fail. She lived at the Plantation Village Nursing Home for only four days before her death. Jessie's zest for life included being an active member in the Jackson County Community. She taught American Red Cross nursing and home care. She also earned her Nurse's Assistant certificate and volunteered at Jackson County Memorial Hospital and Hospice. She taught the Literacy Program and started a scholarship program at WOSC. Jessie was a member of OEA, OREA, NEA, American Legion Auxiliary, and the First Baptist Church in Altus. In addition, she was a dedicated Sunday School Teacher and had taught since the age of 21.

Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Roy, three brothers, K.C. Howard, Sam Howard, and Wash Howard, and a nephew, David Howard, Jessie is survived by her sister, Bessie "Betty" Doane and husband Bennie of Lawton; her sister-in-law, Vernie Howard of Headrick, Oklahoma; nephews, Bob Howard and wife Renee of Navajo, Charlie Howard and wife Johnette of Blair, Paul Howard and wife Marsha of Altus, and Mark Doane and wife Kathy of Beaumont, Texas; nieces, Lois Montgomery and husband Waymond of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Helen Holcombe of Altus, Margaret Schmidt and husband Richard of Vacaville, California, Martha Saure and husband Steve of Weatherford, Oklahoma, Sue Craven and husband Mark of Altus, Linda Doane of Lawton, and Zack and Jim Turpin of Frederickburg, Maryland; great-nieces and great-nephews, Brad Howard, Ryan Howard and wife Erin, Brent Howard, Bron Howard and wife Shelly, Matt Doane, Ryan Schmidt and wife Anne, Kevin Howard and wife Linda, Crystal Kruska and husband Jarrett, Kacy Howard, Kim Muller and husband Rob, Amy Roberts and husband Andrew, and Macie Lyles Tims and husband T.J.; fifteen great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews, other relatives, and many friends and former students who loved her very much.

The family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Jessie Howard Reynolds Scholarship Fund at Western Oklahoma State College, Altus, Oklahoma, at www.wosc.edu, The First Baptist Church in Altus, or the Charity of one's choice.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 16, at 1:00 p.m. until service time. Funeral Services for Jessie Reynolds will be 2:00 p.m. Friday at Lowell-Tims Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
