Obituary for Jessie Mae Dollins
Jessie Mae Thornton-Dollins, 89, of Altus passed away early Tuesday morning, September 29, at Plantation Village Nursing Home in Altus.
She was born on February 12,1920, in Headrick. She was the first of seven children born to Nellie and Bob Marsh. As her father had bragged so much about the boy they were having, several of the town folks remarked that they were anxious to see his "son". This became her nickname among family and friends. She graduated from Headrick High School. After living and working in California for several years, she returned to Headrick and married Jack Thornton on Sept 10,1940 in Elmer, Oklahoma. Jessie was a homemaker, raising three children; she loved to sew for them and would make many of their clothes. She was much admired for the family dinners where she could seat 20 at a specially built table. She loved traveling, and went on several tour-guided trips. She worked in the family propane business for the last 20 years of the 45-year business.
In 1995, she married James Dollins. They enjoyed traveling, dancing, and going to fiddle festivals. In the past few years, she continued her love of dancing. As a member of the Silver Bells she would dance about 5 times per week. She enjoyed playing dominoes and skipbo. Most of all she loved being with her family.
Jessie is survived by her three children and their families, Karen and Ron Moore, of Altus, Kip and Nancy Thornton, of Headrick, and Cheryl and Ronnie McLean, of Altus. She had nine grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. They are Jackie and Wil De Brito and children, Jessica and Jake of Midwest City, OK; Trebor and Carrie Thornton and children, Colton and Cambrie of Altus; Brent and Linda Moore and children Heath and Jamie, and Kenneth of Amarillo, Texas; Dean and Denise Thornton and children, Taylor and Shelby of Headrick; Misti and David Price and children Emily and Marshal of Collinsville Texas; Joey and Marla Nelson and children, Ethan, Kaden, and Cydney of Rogers, Arkansas; Jeff and Ronda Nelson and children Cameron and Madison; Holly and Eric Smith and children, Tanner and Tyler of Tuttle, and Weston Kelly of Hawaii. Three sisters also survive her. They are Neva Jo and Hylton Crain of Arlington, Texas; Peggy Hamilton of Durant, Oklahoma; Dixie and Jimmie Anderson of Altus. She is also lovingly survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands Jack Thornton and James Dollins, one brother, Denver Marsh and two sisters, Nelena (Snorts) Anderson and Bobbie Jones.
Funeral Services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, October 3 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. Visitation will also be held at the funeral home on Friday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Navajoe Cemetery in Friendship, Oklahoma.
