Obituary for Jill Marie Chaney
Jill Marie Chaney, 60, of Altus, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus.
Memorial services have been scheduled for 2:00 pm, Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Lowell-Tims Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating.
Jill was born June 4, 1952, in Muskogee, OK, to Taylor and Helen (Hembree) Sizemore, Jr. A native Oklahoman, she grew up in northeastern Oklahoma, graduating from Checotah High School in 1970. She then attended Southwestern State College, in Weatherford, OK, and graduated in 1974 with a bachelor"s degree in Business Education. She married Alan Chaney on March 9, 1974, and moved to Altus. She later attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University and earned her master"s degree of education in secondary and elementary counseling.
Jill assumed the position of Career Counselor at Southwest Technology Center on July 1, 2009. Prior to this position, she was employed by Navajo Public Schools for thirty years, serving initially as a business education teacher before becoming the counselor for grades K-12 in 1993. While at Navajo, she served as Advanced Placement Coordinator, Gifted and Talented Coordinator, District Test Coordinator, coach and assistant coach of junior high and high school academic teams, and served on various committees such as the Professional Development Committee, Safe and Drug Free Schools Committee, and the CLEP school improvement committee. She was also an Adjunct Business Instructor at Western Oklahoma State College for over 10 years.
Jill was a member of the Oklahoma Association of Career and Technology Education and the Oklahoma School Counseling Association. Chaney was also an active member of Altus Kiwanis, where she was able to expand her service to the children of southwest Oklahoma.
Jill was a fun-loving individual and was a majorette throughout her high school and college years. She loved to sew and advanced to state competition level more than once. She was very involved in her children's school activities and encouraged them in all their endeavors. She supported Brian in his robotic competitions. She deeply loved her husband and children, and adored her grandson, Charles.
Jill is survived by her husband, Alan Chaney, of the home; her son, Brian Chaney and wife Lisa of Altus; daughter, Heather Hood and husband Nicholas of Altus; one grandson, Brian "Charles" Chaney II of Altus; her parents, Taylor and Helen Sizemore, Jr. of Checotah, OK; brother, Glenn Sizemore and wife Claudine of Checotah, OK; step-nephew Mark Johnston; her father- and mother-in-law, Alvin and Marian Chaney of Altus; brother-in-law Mark Chaney and wife Catherine of Oklahoma City, OK; nieces Deborah Chaney of Altus and Rebekah Glaab and husband Chris of Wichita, KS; and a special beloved aunt, Betty Myers of Oklahoma City, OK. Also surviving are many other relatives and friends.
Jill was preceded in death by her infant brother Jack Taylor Sizemore.
