Jimmy D. Snell
Jimmy D. Snell, age 80, long-time resident, cattleman and businessman, passed away late Friday evening, September 29, 2006 at Jackson County Memorial.
Jimmy was born on August 20, 1926, at Cordell, Oklahoma to H.D. and Faye (Perry) Snell. He attended schools in Vernon, New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico and graduated Altus High School, class of 1943. After graduation he volunteered, with his father's consent, for military service in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed on Guam for eighteen months during World War II.
Upon returning home he attended and graduated Oklahoma State University with a B.A. degree. He entered business with his father, H.D., and brother, Perry, in the United Grocry Company. Later he had the responsibility of buying the cattle for the meat markets of United.
He married Virginia Mock on June 6, 1947, and to this union was born Linda, Mark and Betsy. Jim loved golf, his horses, cutting events, team roping and following OSU sports. He retired in 1973 and later moved to his ranch bordering the Wichita Wildlife Refuge.
On December 30, 1995, he married Riva Smith and continued to be active in the ranching and cattle business.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, H.D. and Faye Snell Ridling; two brothers, Jack Snell an Perry Snell; two sisters, Beatrice Pope and Margaret Jones.
He is survived by his wife, Riva, of the home; three children, Linda Anthony and husband Bob, Laguna Beach, California; Dr. Mark Snell and wife, Lisa, Clinton, Missouri and Betsy Koontz and husband, Dr. Doug Koontz, Tulsa, OK; five grandchildren, Jayce Treumann and husband Neil of Henderson, Nevada, Sommer Anthony of Tucson, Arizona Jim Anthony, Laguna Beach, California, Zachary Koontz, of Stillwater, and Katelyn Koontz of Stillwater; two great grandchildren, Aubrey and Ella Treuman of Henderson, Nevada; step-daughters, Stephanie Smith of Altus and Francis Hammack and husband Michael of Edmond, Oklahoma; four step-grandchildren, Alexandria Smith and James Smith, Altus, and Turner and Ty Hammack, Edmond, along with many other relatives and friends.
Special recognition to Charles and Wanda Barker, Robert and Alice Carter, Gwyn Barker and Carleen Jackson for their compassionate care and friendship.
