Joe Edward Boyles, age 86, a longtime resident of Hess, passed away, early Sunday Morning, September 28, 2014 at the Cordell Christian Home in Cordell.
Joe was born in Hess, Oklahoma on February 11, 1928 to George Edward and Ida Belle (Madden) Boyles. Joe graduated from Southside High School class of 1946 where he enjoyed playing baseball and basketball. He was the star pitcher on the first American Legion Baseball team; they were state champions in 1945. Joe"s coach called him the "home run king". He also had the opportunity to play semi-pro baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals. Joe was inducted into the Jackson County Hall of Fame in 2010. In 1946 Joe married Mattie Hasty and out of that union two children were born. After high school Joe worked for Stipes and Williams International Harvester and several years later he bought the business and changed the name to Boyles and Green International Harvester. He later sold the business and went into farming and ranching for many years in the Hess area. On December 12, 1970 he married Bettye Knox at the Grace United Methodist Church in Altus and they were married for well over 43 years. Joe had been a member of the Grace United Methodist since 1969. In 1975 Joe was elected as Jackson County Commissioner District Two and served sixteen consecutive years before retiring in 1990. Joe"s passion, after retirement, was gardening. He was proud of his huge, multiple acre garden and orchid. He grew vegetables and would sell them at the farmers market and he also gave his produce to those in need. Joe, along with his wife Bettye, were foster parents for many years to numerous children. Joe loved his family and was a great servant to people in Jackson County and he will be very much missed.
Preceded in death by his parents; Joe is survived by his wife Bettye of the home; one son, Mark Boyles and his wife Elaine of Lawton; two daughters, Melodye Dees and her husband Jeff of Elgin; Wendy Boyles of Denton, Texas and long time friend Margie White, also of Denton, Texas; one brother, Earnest Dean "Diz" Boyles and his wife Ruthie of Hooker, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Matthew Boyles and his wife Anastasia of Pampa, Texas; Mikayla and Jakob Dees both of Elgin; and Cheyanne Crow of Plano, Texas; a special niece, Pansy Watkins and special nephew Michael Watkins who has preceded Joe in death, along with a special foster child, Diana "Noi"
Marshell; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.
The family will greet friends from 6:30 pm until 7:30 pm, Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Lowell Tims Funeral Home in Altus.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am, Thursday, October 2, 2014 at Lowell-Tims Chapel in Altus with Ricky Crouch officiating. Interment will follow at Hess Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory, Altus.
