Obituary for John Baxter Henry
Altus native, John Baxter Henry, age 62, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 23, 2013, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. John was born in Altus, Oklahoma, on March 11, 1951, at the Allgood Clinic to Baxter and Monette (Kornegay) Henry. He was a third generation native of Altus, descendant of pioneers, Charles Cole and Annie (Russell) Henry.

John attended Altus public schools, Washington Elementary, Central Jr. High, and Altus High School, graduating in 1969. He continued his education at the University of Oklahoma, graduating in 1973. For the rest of his life, John was a proud, loyal, and obnoxious Sooner fan, holding season football tickets and collecting memorabilia.

After graduation, John returned to Altus to join his father and Uncle Roy in the family businesses, CC Henry Company, Automotive Supply Company, and farming.

On May 22, 1981, John married Vickie (Morehead) Henry. They spent 32 wonderful years together in Altus. Among his happiest times were traveling and playing golf with his sons and his friends, watching his beloved Sooners and tormenting his OSU friends.

After selling the Automotive Supply Company, John and Vickie retired for a year before opening The Front Porch. After a short period of time, John began to talk to the stuffed animals as he unloaded freight and decided that he needed to get a real job. John branched out to become a sales representative for Feist Yellow Pages where he received the top sales award for the Southwest Oklahoma directory every year. John found his calling working for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, first as a Child Welfare Specialist and later as a Social Services Specialist II. In April, John was honored with the Best of the Best award by the state of Oklahoma.

John was highly thought of by so many people in Altus. Always the one to go to for advice, encouragement, and the latest "around town" scoop, he will definitely be missed.

John Henry was preceded in death by his parents, Baxter and Monette Henry, and father-in-law, Willis Morehead. He is survived by his wife, Vickie Henry, of the home; two sons, Jeffrey Cole Henry and John Blake Henry, both of Norman; sister, Sally Trenta and husband, Ted, of New Port Richey, Florida; mother-in-law, Mae Morehead; sister-in-law, Shirley Danette Evans and husband, Jerry; nephew, Kerry Evans; niece, Kim Baker and husband, Jerry; niece, Sharlet Rena Evans of Blanchard; and great nieces and nephews, Kaleb Evans, Kassidy Evans, Brady Baker and wife, Laci, and Tobyn Baker.

Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 3908 N Peniel Ave, Suite 330, Bethany, OK 73008.

Family visitation will be this evening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. On Tuesday, interment will take place at the Altus City Cemetery at 9:00 a.m. followed by the celebration of John's life at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Altus.
