John Bert Mitchell was born on November 5th, 1931, in Mangum, Oklahoma to Bert and Mildred Mitchell. He passed away on Sunday afternoon, June 10th, 2018, at Deaconess Hospital, OKC. Daryl Halbert, his close friend, spent the afternoon with John, before he passed.
John’s Grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer V. Jessee were Pioneers in Old Greer County. John was very close to his Grandad, and Elmer taught John to read before he was 5 years old. He gave John a lifelong interest and curiosity in the History of our Country, which John used the rest of his life. John was an avid reader, especially of WWII History.
John’s father, Bert Mitchell, was an Officer in the United States Airforce. After retirement, he lived in Enid, Oklahoma, where John spent many summers growing up. John’s mother, Mildred Mitchell, owned Mildred’s Flower Shop, and her sister, Marjorie Wilson, was a second grade teacher in Mangum Edison School. She was loved by all her students.
When John was a child, his interest in WWII airplanes was brought to life building model airplanes, which he built to perfection. He shared many with his friends, who would hang them from the ceiling, on display.
John attended Oklahoma University from 1949—1953, receiving his B.A. Degree in History. He always loved music, and played the trumpet in the Mangum High School Band. He was given a Scholarship to OU, from the OU Marching Band, where he was a member of the ‘PRIDE OF OKLAHOMA’ during his college years A highlight during his days at OU was when the Band got to go to the Orange Bowl one year, and OU won! John was an OU Fan all of his life.
John worked in Williamsburg, Virginia, for the National Park Service. He would stay in ‘Character’, as he spoke with the Visitors, and enjoyed Tours through the Park.
After retirement, John moved back to Mangum, to be with his Aunt Marjorie Wilson. John was employed by the Greer County Museum until health problems and he moved to the Veteran’s Center in Clinton, where he was pleased with their good care, and friendly people. On special occasions, John was ask to play his Trumpet for the Veteran’s Center.
John was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mangum, and attended the Keystone Sunday School Class. For Church dinners, he would softly play his trumpet, at the request of friends.
John had no known living relatives. Special Mangum friends were, Byron Kelley, Daryl Halbert, and his Class of MHS 1949.
Greer Funeral Home, and Rev. David Gordon, Pastor of the Methodist Church will have services at the Riverside Cemetery on Friday, June 15th, at 10am, and everyone is welcome.
