John Gilford Olive, age 88, of Mangum, passed away early Wednesday morning, August 14, 2013, at Elkview General Hospital in Hobart.
Gilford was born in Greer County, Oklahoma on February 23, 1925 to Thomas Fulton and Bessie Lena (Muncy) Olive. Growing up and attending school in the Central View area, Gilford began working on the family farm by the age of fifteen. On October 31, 1942, Gilford married the love of his life, Imogene "Jean" Duncan and they would spend the next seventy wonderful years together before his death. For thirty two years, Gilford was a Post Master for the United States Postal Service and was also a member of NAPS, National Association of Postal Supervisors, where he once served a term as President for the Oklahoma branch. A proud Army veteran of WW II, Gilford was a member of the American Legion, Post 121, for 50 years and in 2007 became a Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Mangum. Gilford and Jean loved camping with their friends from the Holiday Ramblers and Good Sam Club. In his free time, Gilford enjoyed collecting stamps and coins, watching Mangum Tiger basketball but most of all, spending time with his family and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents; five siblings, Jewell Olive Risinger, Hazal Olive Walters, Irene Olive Dowdy, Floyd Olive, and Nell Olive Hawn; one son-in-law, David Edmonds and one great-grandchild, Kelton Edmonds, Gilford is survived by his wife Jean, of the home; two daughters, Gwenith "Gwen" Edmonds of Hallettsuite, Texas and Celissa "Lisa" Richert and husband Steve of Mangum; six grandchildren, Carroll "Butch" Edmonds, Kimberly Edmonds, Karey Edmonds, Tadd Richert, John Richert and Mark Richert; thirteen great grandchildren, Caleb Edmonds, Callie Edmonds, Claire Edmonds, Colt Edmonds, Katelyn Edmonds, Kyrstan Edmonds, Emily Bland, Addilyn Bland, Ashley Richert, Luke Richert, Taylor Richert, Ford Richert, Cole Richert along with many more nieces, nephews, relatives and close friends.
A funeral service for John Gilford Olive will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Mangum with Pastor Shaun Johnson officiating and under the direction of Greer Funeral Home, interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
