Obituary for John L. Jones
John Leslie Jones, 73, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2008 in Las Vegas Nevada. He and wife Ida had been residing there for six years. John, the youngest of four children, was born on Januarey 6, 1935 in Roxton, Texas to J.B. Jones and Mary Louise Allen-Jones and he spent his childhood and youth in Altus, Oklahoma, where many relatives still reside. John has been married to Ida M. Mitchell for 38 years. During his first marriage to Shirley E. Neal, a daughter, Anita L. Jones was born.
John graduated Lincoln High School in Altus, Oklahoma. After 4 years in the Navy, he lived in Los Angeles, CA for 20 years. He received a Bachelor's degree from California State University, Long Beach and achieved his Master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California before moving to Denver, CO.
Most of his career, John worked in Law Enforcement, as a police officer, U.S. Marshall and Investigative Officer for the State of Colorado. He was appointed by the Mayor as Assistant Commissioner of Denver's Anti-Crime Council. John was a man of infinite wisdom, a strong community advocate and a volunteer school counselor. He worked tirelessly for safe neighborhoods, upholding the law and especially the empowerment and education of young men. He was a member of the youth support groups Rite of Passage in Denver, Colorado and the Committed 100 Black Men in Las Vegas, Nevada.
He is preceded in death by his brother, J.B. Jones, Jr; father, J.B. Jones, Sr; mother, Mary Louise Allen Jones-Martin; and step-father, James Martin. He is survived by his wife, Ida M. Jones; daughter, Anita L. Jones; grandson, John Ryan Peters; sisters, Eunna Faye McMillan; Betty Paul Phillips; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.
Services will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday, June 29, at 4:00 p.m. at Palm Mortuary, and in Altus, Oklahoma on Saturday, July 5, at 10:00 a.m. at Lowell-Tims Chapel. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to fund established in memory of John L. Jones to recognize the accomplishments of young men associated with the Committed 100 Men, Las Vegas, Nevada organization. Deposits can either be made in person at any Washington Mutual Bank nationwide or checks made payable to John Ryan Peters-Custodial Account Number 437696956-0 and mailed to Washington Mutual Bank (WAMU), Grand Canyon Parkway, 9701 West Flamingo Rd., Suite 3, Las Vegas, Nevada 89147.
The family of John L. Jones will receive friends between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 4, 2008 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
