Obituary for Johnnie Keith Maples
Johnnie “Keith” Maples went home to be with his Lord and Savior on June 7, 2022, in his home surrounded by his family. Keith chose to go on his terms and the Lord Jesus answered his request.
Keith was born July 9, 1953, in Fort Worth, Texas to parents, Kozy Estel Maples and Lois “Shumate” Maples joining his older brother Kenneth Crisp. He and his parents later moved to Denver where Keith remained until he started school. Lois & Keith returned to Mangum and welcomed baby brother Kem. Keith attended school all his years at Mangum, graduating a Mangum Tiger in 1972. He celebrated his 50th year of being a Tiger in May of 2022.
In 1973, he attended Altus Jr. College where he met the love of his life, Shirley Arter. The two married on November 26, 1975, in Eldorado, Oklahoma. To their union Johnnie Jr. and Aridawn were added to complete their family. Keith worked for Halliburton starting in 1978 until April 1984, when he and Shirley took their children and moved to Las Vegas where Keith began his dream career dealing poker at the Silver Slipper. He met people from all over the world and expanded his view of people.
In 1995, Keith and his family returned to Oklahoma, and he returned to work for Halliburton. In 1999 Keith once again expanded his horizons; he began to work in Saudi Arabia with Halliburton until a suicide bomber exploded a bomb on him in October after the attack of 9-11. He was wrapped in the arms of an angel to survive such an attack. Keith was detained by the Saudi Government for forty-five days until he was able to return to Oklahoma.
Keith suffered kidney failure in October of 2018 and began dialysis treatment. He continued treatment three days a week with continued failing health. Keith chose to stop the treatment on May 30, 2022, after considerable time visiting with the Lord who he trusted above all. He also visited with a couple of dear friends and talked with his Pastor. God took him home Tuesday morning quietly and peacefully. Keith’s one and only desire was that all his friends and family have a relationship with Jesus Christ his Lord and Savior. His final words to his beloved wife were “I love you, see you soon.” Keith will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his Mother Lois Henry, Grandparents Lloyd & Buel Shumate. Grandchildren, Veronica Maples and baby Cobb; Father-in-law, Loney Arter; Mother-in-law, Mae Arter; Sisters-in-law, Teena Emmons and Carla Maples; Brother-in-law, Bill McDonald; Nephews, Andrew Maples.
Left to honor his memory is his loving wife Shirley Maples; Son, Johnnie Keith & wife Imelda Maples, daughter Aridawn & husband Brandon Cobb; Brothers, Kenny Crisp and wife Beverly and Kem Maples; Sister, Janice Meyers; Grandchildren, Scoutt Maples, Bailey Cobb, Johnnie Keith Maples III, Cason Cobb, Branson Everett Cobb and Mathew Saucedo; Great Grandchild, Carlie Saucedo.
