Obituary for Joy Lea Thompson
Joy Lea (Hall) Thompson, age 90 of Altus, passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2020.
Joy was born August 29, 1930, in Friendship, OK to Roscoe and Myrtle (Robertson) Hall. She worked lots of hard years on the farm with her parents and two brothers. I wish SHE could tell you the time she was teasing the racer snake and it chased her up the tree and wouldn’t let her down. Such a funny story! Joy graduated from Friendship School with many friends and gave much of her time to help a very true, close friend Richard Churchwell. Many, young and old, thought of her as “the sweetest, kindest, loving person”.
Joy, along with her husband Don and mother and father-in-law owned and operated Troy’s Grocery and Market. At the same time, she was the manager of the S & H Green Stamp store for 25 years. After her retirement, she worked at Altus Fabric beside close friend Bobbie Ashcraft and thoroughly enjoyed her job. Being a master seamstress, the fabric store was heaven to her. Sewing was a great passion of hers. Oh my gosh, she spent numerous hours sewing for herself and numerous others; far better than any manufacturer. Her pride was her hand-. stitched quilts. Numerous hours were spent creating these masterpieces.
Joy was a gifted oil painter. She enjoyed giving lessons to many others with her talented style. She loved giving her works to friends and family for their enjoyment. China painting was another skill she mastered. Beautiful pieces are displayed throughout her home and other’s homes. She had an amazing imagination like no other.
How could one not mention her beautiful yard, flowers, and a Koi pond. She spent numerous hours tending to each. She not only had a green thumb but had two. I would dare anyone to find a weed of any kind in her yard. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her everything. Family meant SO much to her.
Joy married Donald Dee Thompson in Vernon, Texas on May 12, 1949. To this union, two children were born. A son, Michael Don Thompson, and a daughter, Shelley Thompson O’Connor.

Joy is preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws, Troy and Jewell Thompson husband(Don), brothers, Lewis V. Hall and Dean Hall, sisters-in-laws, Janie Hall, Lynelle Berg, and Dorothy Russell, infant niece, Holly Hall and son Michael Don Thompson.

She is survived by her daughter, Shelley O’Connor. Three grandchildren: DJ O’Connor, Jennifer Williams and husband Matt, and Michael Don Thompson, Jr. and wife Meredy. Seven great-grandchildren: Brandt and Blakleigh O’Connor, Luke, Maddison, and Cole Williams, Merrick, McCrae Thompson, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or a no-kill animal shelter of your choice.
