Obituary for Kenneth Graham Johnstone

Kenneth Graham “Ken” Johnstone, 81, of Irving, Texas, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

He was born on March 30, 1944, in San Francisco, California, to Alan Johnstone and Gertrude “Betty” Beard Johnstone. After the passing of his mother, his father Alan married Dorothy “Dot” Larmour. Ken was raised in Berkeley, California, and spent summers with family in Inverness. In his youth, he loved sailing and raced El Toros sailboats in Tomales Bay and the Richmond basin. His character was grounded in serving others and earning his own way as evidenced from his involvement in Scouting, manning a paper route, and working in Sitka, Alaska before beginning his career path.

Following his graduation from high school, Ken found his way to Texas and enjoyed a long and successful career in computer programming before retiring in 2000. Ken met and married the love of his life, Carrye, and together they built a beautiful life in Irving. He was an avid fan of Auto Cross Racing, which inspired him to join Sports Club of America and Rally America. He was also a proud supporter and volunteer, alongside Carrye, with Special Olympics Communication. He was a Ham Radio operator in his spare time. Ken held a strong admiration and love for the Fire Department. He was honored to be in Class One of the Citizen Fire Academy and to serve as a founding member of its Alumni Association. Ken found joy in life’s simple pleasures - especially sharing a bowl of ice cream each evening at 9:00 p.m. with his beloved dogs.

Ken is preceded in death by his daughter, Becky Johnstone; his sister, Susan Johnstone Jamison; his parents, Alan and Betty Johnstone; and his stepmother, Dorothy Johnstone. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Carrye Johnstone; stepdaughter, Marie Hollwedel; sisters, Margaret Kreutzkampf and Judith Aunger; nieces, nephews, their spouses and children, Russell (& Amy) Aunger, Irene (& Brian) Smith, Brent (& Stephanie) Jamison, and Jay (& Repsie) Jamison. Ken will also be deeply missed by a host of extended family and friends who were blessed to know him.

Family will receive friends from 6:00p.m. through 8:00p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at Brown’s Memorial Funeral home 707 N. MacArthur Blvd. Irving, TX 75061. A Fireman’s wake will occur at 7:00p.m. to share stories and memories of Ken. The family will also have memory cards available at both the visitation and service for anyone who would like to share a memory with the family.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00a.m. on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home 707 N. MacArthur Blvd. Irving, TX 75061. An additional visitation will be held from 10:30a.m. through 12:00p.m. on Friday,

October 10, 2025, at Lowell–Tims Funeral Home 1100 E. Tamarack Rd. Altus, OK 73521.
