Obituary for Kenneth L. Bartlett
Kenneth Bartlett
September 9, 1925 – February 27, 2022
Kenneth LeRoy Bartlett, 96, died Sunday, February 27, at Harmon County Memorial Hospital in Hollis.
Kenneth was born September 9, 1925 down on Buck Creek, and attended school at Halsmith, LaCasa, and Westview. Just before graduating, he was inducted into the Marines and was stationed on several South Pacific Islands and China. His most memorable happening of his overseas duty was the walk on the Great Wall of China.
Upon his return from service in World War II, he married the love of his life, Lorene (Mayhugh) Bartlett on Christmas Eve, 1946. To this union, they had three children Kent, June & Joye.
Ken, as he was known by his gun buddies, was a collector of different antique Americana. He started his collection with coins and then switched his interest to old cowboy equipment. In 1989 he was privileged to attend the Gene Autry Museum in Los Angeles. Several items on display were once a part of Kenneth’s collection, and it gave him great pride knowing others were able to enjoy them and much as he did. He was a lifetime member of the Texas Gun Collectors Association and had several trophies he won with displays at different shows. He sold and traded with collectors in most of the states, Canada, England, Japan, France, Mexico, and Germany. Though the collections may have changed through the years, Kenneth’s love for collecting and trading “stuff” never wavered. From his baseball collection to spurs and saddles, Kenneth always had some of the most unique and rare items that friends from near and far would travel to his house to see, and with each item came a story behind it. His memory was impeccable, and his desire to capture and preserve history was like no other. It was his great love for his collections that allowed him to meet so many people, including some who were famous. He made many lifelong friendships with folks from across the U.S. along the way. The last few years as Kenneth’s mobility decreased, he wasn’t able to collect and trade as much, but he sure enjoyed sitting and admiring something different from his collection each day.
Kenneth was a history buff. He knew the answer to any question you could throw at him. He was also a very giving person. He served on the Harmon County Clean-Up Committee and other boards for many years, and he especially enjoyed volunteering at the museum. He was dedicated to bringing together the stories of people of the American West, and especially of our great state. Kenneth loved to tell the story of how Quanah Parker tried to take his mother as one of his wives when she was just a child. Quanah and his tribe stopped at their homestead along the trailway and decided she was pretty cute and he wanted to take her with him. Most of the time people didn’t tell Quanah “no”, nor would he take no for an answer. But Kenneth’s grandma was pretty persuasive and offered a hot meal and a place to set up camp for the night instead of giving him her young daughter, and for one reason or another, he went for it. The next morning when the family woke, the tribe was gone and they never saw them again.
Kenneth truly lived life to the fullest. He worked hard on the farm and loved telling a good joke. He enjoyed traveling to antique auctions and finding new things to add to his collections. Kenneth also looked forward to his morning trips to the coffee shop to catch up with his buddies. And, he was an avid domino player. He played up until the last few years when his mobility restricted him.
Kenneth treasured his time spent with his family and enjoyed taking the kids to Lugert every weekend to ski and swim with their cousins throughout their years growing up. Kent, June, and Joye loved watching him jump the ramp and perform his other ski tricks out on the lake. After retirement, he enjoyed his annual summer trips to Red River, New Mexico with Lorene and his granddaughters. Family was just important to him and he showed that each and every day. He enjoyed going to watch his kids and grandkids in their sports and other activities, and he rarely missed an event. He always took the time to be there for anyone in need, and truly was the rock of his family.
Kenneth is survived by his children Kent Bartlett of Edmond, June Norman of Hollis and Joye Waller and husband Grady of Hollis; his grandchildren Scott Bartlett and wife Joy of Broken Arrow, Jenny Graves and husband Shad of Altus, Leah Womack and husband Jason of Perkins, Blake Bartlett of Edmond and Logan Churchwell and wife M’Lainey of Iowa Park, TX; 5 great-grandchildren Zoee, Gavin, Zadee, Lexi and Kingston. He is also survived by his brother Bob Bartlett and wife Kay of Altus and Lawanda Thompson of Heavener.
He was proceeded in death by his wife Lorene Bartlett, parents Hiram and Lela Bartlett, father-in-law Andy Mayhugh, mother-in-law Maggie Mayhugh. Brothers James, Romie, Frank, and Lindy. Sisters Ogoretta Bartlett Richey, Ovetta Bartlett, Auvanelle Bartlett, and Jean Brozek. Brother and sister-in-law Calvin & Irvine Castleman, brother-in-law LeRoy Crawford and brother and sister-in-law Otto and Lavonne Buis, and son-in-law Kenneth “Bub” Norman.
