Letha Beatrice Shackelford Barnes
Leatha Beatrice Shackelford Barnes died August 31, 1993 at age 79 in Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Services have been scheduled for 2:00pm Friday, September 3, 1993 at Lowell-Tims Chapel in Altus with the Rev. Ken Pate, First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Altus Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
She was born September 17, 1914 in Sherman, (Grayson County), Texas to Pearl Know Shackelford and Thomas Alford Shackelford. At age 2 she moved with her parents to Jackson county, friendship community. After attending the new Friendship school for a year she and her parents moved to Snyder, Oklahoma where her father ran a restaurant. She moved with her parents to California in 1921, where they lived for about a year. She then returned to the Friendship community where she graduated from Friendship school in the class of 1932.
After graduation she attended Draughn's Business College. On February 14, 1934 she married hep high school classmate, Leon Barnes. She joined the Friendship Methodist Church in 1933 and was active in the Women's Society of Christian Service and Sunday School. She and her husband co-sopnsored the youth group at the Friendship Church for some time. She remained a member until the church was closed in 1982 and she transferred membership to the First United Methodist in Altus. She was also a member of the Navajo Farm Women's Demonstration Club and Navajo Historical Society. Her autobiography appears in the Historical Society book :I Remember When".
Survivors include her husband, Leon Barnes of Altus; one daughter, Twila Bearden and husband Edgar Bearden of Santa Fe, New Mexico; four granddaughters, Lisa Ann and hsband, Rev. David Conley of Jefferson City, Mo., Leah Kay Bearden of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Sherri Lynn and husband Willy Ansay of Viroqua, Wi., and Jaye Erin Bearden of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Also surviving are two great grandchildren, Sarah ann and Adam David Conley of Jefferson City, Mo., an aunt, Zelva Knox of Altus and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1959, her mother in 1970, her sister Joanne in 1971 and her brother Wilbur Shackelford in 1988.
Memorial contributions can be mad to First United Methodist Church Elevator Fund.
