Obituary for Loreta F. Walker
Loreta Fay Walker, age 91, of Altus, passed away Thursday morning, December 29, 2022, at The
Courtyards at Magnolia Creek Assisted Living in Altus.
Loreta was born to Sterling and Irene Vaughan at her grandfather's farm, a few miles southwest of Altus, on April 28, 1931. She graduated from Altus High School in June of 1949 where she was a stand-out basketball player. She married William G. Walker, Jr. (Buddy) a few weeks later in Vernon, Texas. She had her first child, Stephanie K. Walker Brater in 1951, followed by Kristi L. Walker in 1953 and then Brad Walker in 1960. After Buddy returned from the Korean War they moved the family to Ponca City, Oklahoma in 1954 where Buddy would begin a 40-year career with Continental Carbon. Loreta raised her children in Ponca City and held a variety of jobs including selling Avon and working as a lab technician for five doctors at the Medical Arts Center. In 1976, the family moved to Seoul, Korea where they lived for the next four years. Loreta made a wide circle of friends in Korea and taught English as a second language to a variety of clients including employees of the Korean Herald newspaper. She moved to Houston, Texas in 1980 where she would spend the next 15 years until Buddy retired. Loreta traveled with Buddy around the world, living in Australia for several months, and visiting Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, France, the Netherlands, Spain, England, and Scotland. Upon Buddy's
retirement, they moved back to Altus. Loreta first met Buddy when she was 15 years old, and they were married for 67 years until Buddy's death in 2017. Her friends called her Slick and called her husband Pokey. Pokey was quiet and reserved, but Slick had a laugh that could fill a room. She will be missed.
In addition to her husband, Loreta was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Wanda Sue Smallwood.

She is survived by her daughters, Stephanie Walker Brater of Indianapolis and her husband
Craig; Kristi Walker of San Diego; and her son Brad Walker of Bethesda, Maryland and his wife Valerie. She is survived by one sister, Elsie Lee Landrum; and two brothers, Weldon and Charles Vaughan. Loreta had three beautiful granddaughters, Aimee, Gabriela, and Giuliana, whom she adored. She is also survived by eight nieces and two nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Loreta Vaughan Walker and William Walker
Scholarship at Western Oklahoma State College, 2801 North Main Street, Altus, Oklahoma or
www.wosc.edu.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Lowell - Tims Funeral Home and Crematory, Altus, Oklahoma.
