Obituary for Maggie Inez Ellis
Maggie Inez Ellis, 94, of Altus passed away Sunday, April 18, 2010, at the English Village Manor Nursing Home in Altus.
Maggie was born November 30, 1915, in Ambrose, Texas, to James M. and Ida (O"Dell) Ledbetter. She was the youngest of seven children born to this union.
Her family arrived in Jackson County, Oklahoma, on October 25, 1916. She attended schools at Pleasant Point, Friendship, Hess, and Porter High School. She married W.H. Kirby October 12, 1933, in Altus and to this union a son, William Hugh Kirby, was born. They were residing in Santa Cruz, California, when W.H. accidentally drowned while fishing on June 19, 1943. Upon returning to Altus, she resided with her mother. On March 5, 1946, she married George W. Ellis of Lubbock, Texas. For the next twenty-seven years, they farmed near Lubbock until their retirement in 1973. They returned to Altus in 1973 to be near Maggie"s family. She was employed in the jewelry department at Treasure City and later at Grace United Methodist Child Development Center, where for eight years she enjoyed caring for and teaching the two-year-old children. To these beloved children, she was their own "Miss Maggie." She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Altus where she taught the ladies in Adult 6 Sunday School Department. She enjoyed many years of service in WMU. She was a regular attendee of the Seg Hove Senior Citizens and a volunteer for many years since 1994.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, four brothers, Ennis Lee Ledbetter, Otis Wilbank Ledbetter, James Frederick Ledbetter, and Arvel Thomas Ledbetter, two sisters, Ruth Kinard and Mary Belle Kirby, Maggie is survived by her son, William Hugh Kirby and wife Janette of Altus; grandsons, William H. Kirby II, George D. Kirby, and Kelly Shawn Kirby and wife Amanda; great-grandchildren, Pyper Knicole Kirby, Ciarra Marie Kirby, Samantha Michelle Kirby, and Connor Malachi Kirby, and one sister-in-law from her second marriage, Willie Lue Jeffreys. Numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends also survive her.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 21, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

Funeral Services for Maggie Ellis will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22, 2010, at Lowell-Tims Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
