Obituary for Marcella Ruth Sweet
Marcella Ruth Sweet, age 63, of Tulsa, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2011 at St. John Hospital, in Tulsa.

Mrs. Sweet was born on November 28, 1947, in Memphis, Tennessee to Marcellus and Myrtle (Gibson) Harris. Moving to Montgomery, Alabama as a small child, her father worked at a local Air Force Base, until she was thirteen. She then moved to Omaha, Nebraska where her father was employed by the Strategic Air Command in Omaha and worked throughout Nebraska and the Dakotas, working on missile silos. At sixteen, the family moved to Titusville, Florida, where she graduated from high school, while her father worked at NASA. Beginning her college career at Stetson University in Deland, Florida, she completed her undergraduate degree in psychology at the University of Florida, in Gainesville, in 1969. In 1971, she graduated from the University of Tulsa with a master"s degree in clinical psychology and worked for the next two years for the Oklahoma Department of Health in Clinton, Oklahoma. On August 30, 1974, she married Allen W. Sweet and they moved to Tulsa where they worked for Children"s Medical Center. In 1976, they moved to the Smoky Mountains, in North Carolina, where she worked in the Cherokee Reservation School System and then in 1978, they moved back to Tulsa where she worked at the regional education service center, in Bartlesville, for the next two years. In 1980, Marcella entered the doctoral program in Developmental Psychology at OSU. Graduating in 1982, she entered private practice with Allen and worked at the Hissom State School for the developmentally disabled until 1985, when she entered full-time private practice with Allen which they continued in until her health began to fail in November of 2007. After leaving private practice, she remained a homemaker until her death.

Marcella is survived by her husband, Allen, of the home; three children, Carrie Ann Sweet of the home, Debby Sweet Burdett and husband Lee of Stillwater and Michael Sweet and wife Makaylin of Cantonment, Florida; five grandchildren, Arthur Burdett, Trevor Burdett, Kaylee Johnson, Tia Sweet and Portia Sweet; her parents, Marcellus and Myrtle Harris, of Jacksonville, Florida and one sister, Olivia Ruth and husband Bill of Tulsa along with many other relatives and friends.

Graveside services for Marcella Sweet will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at Riverside Cemetery with Pastor Shawn Johnson officiating. Services are under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
