Obituary for Maria Fernando Olivarez
Maria Fernando Olivarez, fondly called Mary, 92, of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 27, 2024, in Vernon, Texas. Born on May 30, 1931, in San Juan City, Philippines, to Narciso and Valentina Tolentino Fernando, Mary was a steadfast source of strength and support for her family throughout her life.
From a young age, Mary demonstrated remarkable resilience. During World War II, as Japan occupied the Philippines, she stood in long lines for rations, an experience that shaped her enduring spirit of perseverance. These tales of her youth, filled with challenges and survival, became stories she shared with love, teaching lessons of strength and resilience to all who listened.
On April 27, 1960, Mary married Julian Jarin Olivarez, embarking on a journey as a dedicated US military spouse. Together they navigated the demands of Navy life with love and strength, building a family centered around care and resilience. A beloved social hub, Mary's home was always filled with friends, laughter, and the delightful aromas of her favorite Filipino dishes. Her faith was deeply rooted in the Catholic Church community, guiding her through life's challenges and joys.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Julian, and her cherished siblings Patrocinio Kaamiño, Arsenio Fernando, Segundina Saludo, Lucia Geollegue, Antonio Fernando, Laureana Fernando, Emilia Fernando, and Florentina Fernando. Her legacy continues through her children, Edna Fernando Dodson and her husband Carl, Glen Fernando Olivarez, and Alex Fernando Olivarez and his wife Angela; her grandchildren Rachel Khmarsky and her husband Vlad, Michael Studdard and his wife Jessica, James Studdard, Mark Dodson, Mary Margeaux Olivarez, and Mary Martina Olivarez; and her great-grandson, Luca Khmarsky.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Altus, Oklahoma, officiated by Fr. Joseph David with arrangements by Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory.
Mary's warm, practical nature and her tales of a storied past will be dearly missed and forever cherished by those who knew and loved her.
