Maria M. DeWilde, age 75, of Altus, passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2015, at Integris Hospice House, in Oklahoma City.
Mrs. DeWilde was born in Brownsville, Texas on January 23, 1939, to Andres G. and Felipa (Lopez) Garza. After graduating from high school in Brownsville, Maria ate banana splits and drank malts in order to gain enough weight to join the Army. Traveling to San Antonio, Maria made her weight, accomplished her goal and spent three years proudly serving her country. While assigned to Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, Maria met James Neil DeWilde, and they were married on June 17, 1961, and spent the next fifty-three wonderful years together before her death. Shortly after their marriage, Jim was assigned to Korea and Maria went home to Brownsville to await his return. Over the next twenty years, they spent time in assignments in Mississippi, Colorado and Georgia where Jim discharged from the Army and shortly thereafter joined the United States Air Force. They then traveled to New Mexico, Japan, Illinois and finally to Altus AFB in 1971. While in Altus, Maria worked in childcare and enjoyed bowling, being with her family and supporting Jim in his "clowning around".
Preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Andres I. Garza and Francisca Lopez, a special aunt who raised Maria after her parents died, she is survived by her husband, Jim DeWilde, of the home; two sons, James DeWilde, Jr., and wife Sylvia of Port St. John, Florida and Richard DeWilde of San Francisco, California; one sister, Lourdes Garza Castillo of Fayetteville, North Carolina along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Mass memorial services for Maria DeWilde will be at 10 a.m., Friday, January 9, 2015, at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church with Father James A. Wickersham officiating.
