Obituary for Maria de la Luz Moreno
Maria de la Luz Moreno was called to her eternal home on November 6, 2021. Maria was born on October 31, 1940, in Chihuahua, Mexico, to Vicente and Catalina Mendoza, and as a girl, Maria loved to dance and swim. After meeting the love of her life and marrying, she and her new husband immigrated to the United States and eventually settled in Altus, Oklahoma with their growing family. Maria embodied the virtues of a Christian walk and taught her children to store their treasures in heaven and that right behavior and appropriateness were the greatest demonstrations of one's relationship with Christ. The leading principle that she worked to impress upon her children was to love the Lord with all your heart and that one can only come to love another by loving God first. For thirteen years, Maria worked tirelessly alongside her husband to pastor three churches, all the while ministering to women and offering much-needed leadership and mentoring to younger women. Her family and friends will forever remember her as a truly traditional woman of God with an unmoving faith that was absolutely grounded in her love of God's word and confirmed in her daily prayer life. Maria's spirited, and feisty love of an argument made for grand opportunities to proclaim and defend the things that she firmly believed in. Maria securely believed that all could find peace and happiness in Christ Jesus, despite their burdens: Venid a mí todos los que estáis trabajados y cargados, y yo os haré descansar. Llevad mi yugo sobre vosotros, y aprended de mí, que soy manso y humilde de corazón; y hallaréis descanso para vuestras almas (Mateo 11:28-29).
Her love of God was equaled only by the love of her family that had grown to an expansive number. To her family, Maria was truly the example of thrift and believed that saving provided a blessing that allowed her to be a blessing to others, and she encouraged her children and grandchildren to take advantage of every opportunity to learn. One of her greatest joys was to see her children and especially her grandchildren receive college educations, this she recognized as a blessed opportunity that they were afforded, although she had not been. Maria’s love for her family and friends is permanently etched on all that have known her.
Maria is survived by her husband of sixty one years, Jose Moreno of Altus, OK, six children, fifteen grandchildren, and twenty-one great-grandchildren; Jose and Noemi Espinoza of Colorado Springs, Co, Freddrick and Abigail Bass and children, Freddrick Jr., Quinn Noemi, and Brooklynn of Vero Beach, FL, Justin and Alizabeth Nathaniel and children, Mia, Milez, and Kobe of Salisbury, MD.
