Mary Ann Appleby, 97, of Altus, OK, passed away peacefully on September 14th, 2024. Born Marie Ann D'Aquila on August 29, 1927 in St. Francisville, Louisiana, Mary Annwas the second child of Jimmie and Consetta D'Aquila. She had one well-beloved brother, Vincent Joseph D'Aquila, whom she called VJ. She was a lively and curious child, popular at school and class valedictorian. She obtained her higher education at Dominican College in New Orleans and later at what is now called the University of Louisiana at Lafayettte. There she met a returning WWII veteran, Fred Logsdon, who was attending school on the GI bill. She and Fred married in 1947. Over the next 11 years, they had five children, Dorothy Ann, Fred Ulysses, Jr.,Catherine Elizabeth, James Patrick, and Mary Theresa. After the birth of their first two children, the Korean War commenced and Fred was recalled into the military, beginning his long military career. As an Air Force officer's wife, Mary Ann gracefully mastered all the cultural, social, and logistical skills that role demanded as the family was stationed from places as far-flung as pre-statehood Alaska to Albany, Georgia and Madrid, Spain, among others. In 1966 the family was stationed at Altus Air Force Base in Altus,Oklahoma. Mary Ann was active in the community including serving as PTA president at Falcon Elementary School and president of the Officer's Wives Club and directed activities at the air-base Teen Club. It was at this time that Mary Ann began her 58-year devotion to her new parish church, Prince of Peace. After her marriage dissolved in 1970, Mary Ann decided to stay and make her home in the town of Altus with her children. She was a long-time dedicated employee of the National Bank of Commerce. She completed a Banking Association Certification through OSU and managed the NBC Altus Airbase branch. In 1985 Mary Ann started anew chapter in her life when she married Altus architect, William A. "Bill" Appleby. They enjoyed many happy years together, often visiting Mary Ann's hometown in Louisiana and travelling a good deal both in the States and abroad and socializing with family and friends. Mary Ann was actively engaged in her community, particularly with her PEO chapter where she created so many lasting friendships. She was a faithful and active parishioner at Prince of Peace Church and used her talent as an excellent cook to plan and prepare countless annual Thanksgiving feasts. She was a hospice service volunteer. She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren and was always willing to sew a costume, help with a project, and deliver advice! She approached all she did with dedication, love, and a keen sense of humor. Loved by many for her lively personality, her storytelling, her generosity and her open-hearted goodness, Mary Ann leaves a legacy of many fond memories in the hearts of so many. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother VJ D'Aquila, her husband, Bill Appleby, and beloved stepson Bob Appleby.
