Azalene Curry, age 86, originally of Eldorado, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2013, in her assisted living residence in Cornville, Arizona, near her long-time home in Sedona. Born Marie Azalene Beasley on August 28, 1927, she was the only child of Jesse S. and Roxie A. (Black) Beasley of Eldorado. She is survived by her three children, Cheri (Spring Lake Heights, NJ), Ramona (Champaign, IL), and Scott (Ashland, OR), and five grandchildren: Rosa, Matthew, Jonathan, Christopher, and Jia. Azalene"s husband of sixty-five years, Sam Curry, pre-deceased her in Sedona by eleven months.
Azalene attended Eldorado Elementary and High School, where she played on the basketball team and graduated as 1945 valedictorian. That fall she enrolled to study home economics at what is now Oklahoma State University at Stillwater. Among many friends Azalene made there, she met Sam Curry at a pie supper she helped to organize and immediately won him over with her beautiful smile and cherry pie (which she readily admitted that she had for lack of time bought at a bakery). They married in Dallas on her 20th birthday.
In partnership with her husband, Azalene helped build and operate family businesses in custom harvesting and ranching while raising their children in Council Grove, Kansas, where they had settled in 1955. In the 1960s-70s, she also managed the local movie theater the couple had bought and enjoyed working in an insurance agency and a fabric store. Azalene was an expert seamstress and also excellent cook and baker"repeatedly demonstrating that her cherry pie (and every other dish she made) was superior to anything one could buy.
In Sedona after 1988, Azalene became the long-serving treasurer of the Arizona Flywheelers Steam Engine Club, through which she made many close friends, as she did among her neighbors and the congregation of the Church of Christ in Sedona, the church of which she had also been a member in Eldorado. She also enjoyed growing cacti and did volunteer work in the community. Azalene was altogether a loving, patient, and supportive daughter, wife, mother and grandmother and loyal friend to many in every place she lived. She will be sorely grieved and missed by her family and many friends across the country.
By her request, Azalene will be buried next to her parents following a graveside service in the Eldorado Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26. On Saturday morning beginning at 10 a.m., family members will greet those wishing to gather and pay respects to Azalene at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, in Eldorado. The family will also welcome online tributes posted to her obituary space at www.Lowell-Tims.com. (In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Arthritis Foundation.)
