Mrs. Murphey passed away in Altus on Sunday, November 29, 2015.
Marion Laverne Murphey was born to Pete and Mary Laveria (Spiva) Fessenden in Olustee, Oklahoma on August 16, 1929. She was the first child born during the depression and experienced the flood that washed away homes and farms and people lost lives. The small family was on their farm just north of Olustee at the time Marion"s father and mother carried her into Olustee for their safety because their farm was under water. They resided in the Olustee Hotel until the water receded and they could return to the farm.
Marion had a passion for reading, she would busy herself hour after hour, that is until Laveria would bring her back to reality and ask for help around the farm.
Marion was a good student in Olustee and participated at all the activities, including Glee Club, Basketball and was Valedictorian of her senior class. She attended Draughns business school in Wichita Falls, TX and later married Gerald Murphey. Gerald had been a childhood sweetheart. His family came to Olustee and his father worked for the railroad and managed the depot as did Marion"s grandfather, Sydney Fessenden.
Upon marrying Gerald on July 26, 1947 they established their home in Wichita Falls, Texas. On July 30, 1948 their daughter, Shelia Kay was born. She was their only child and resided in Wichita Falls until she attended College in Dallas. Later Shelia married Cecil Jones of Dallas and they blessed them with grandchildren.
Marion"s life was very fulfilled with being a mother and homemaker, as Shelia got older Marion volunteered at a local nursing home and became the activities director and later took classes to become a Nursing Home Administrator.
Marion and Gerald returned to Olustee and lived in her childhood home. They added a sunroom to the house where she and Gerald could see the farm in where she was carried to safety by her father. They enjoyed many hours together looking down at the farm and the beauty that area offers.
Returning to Olustee Marion and Gerald moved their membership to Grace United Methodist Church. They were active in all church activities but Marion especially loved her Sunday School Class.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Survivors include her daughter, Shelia Kay and husband Cecil Jones of Katy, Texas; two grandchildren, Kristin and husband Mike McCullough of Salinas, California and Clayton Jones of Katy, TX; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Jennie Kay and husband Dale Bilbrey of Olustee and Debra Ann and husband John Borders of Altus; a niece April and husband Shannon Preston of Altus; a nephew, Curtis Cotner of Olustee and many other relatives and friends.
