Martha Marie Sappington, age 86, of Willow, passed away Sunday afternoon, March 28, 2010, at Quartz Mountain Medical Center in Mangum.
Mrs. Sappington was born on September 23, 1923, in Russell, Oklahoma, to K. Kerbo and Edna Marie (Wilhelm) Kerbo. After graduating from Centralvue, as salutatorian of the class, she attended Mangum Junior College. In 1954, she graduated cum laude from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with a bachelor"s of science degree and spent many years as a girls basketball coach and teacher. She held numerous honorable positions such a President and Secretary of Greer County O.E.A and Treasurer of W.M.S. and President and Education Director of E.S.A.
She was a member of the Oklahoma State Honor Society, Alpha Phi Sigma, School Marms, O.E.A., N.E.A., President"s Honor Roll at Southwestern Oklahoma State University and was listed in who"s who in American Education, Creative and Successful Personalities and Personalities of the South, and Leaders of Secondary Education. She was Washita County Teacher of the Year and also Greer County Teacher of the Year in 1973.
She was Student Council Teacher of the Year, Life member of FFA Alumni Association and Honorary Member of Granite FFA. She taught at Lake Creek, Port and Granite. Her students won many awards in the Southwestern Intercollegiate Meet at Weatherford. She sponsored Junior and Senior Classes and also pep clubs. She was also an advisor for school newspapers and annuals.
On October 18, 1947, she married Jack Sappington of Brinkman and they were married forty years before his death on November 7, 1987. From 1965 until 1995, she taught Business Education at Granite and was very active in the Granite Educational Enrichment Foundation. Her church activities included teaching in the Adult Department and serving on committees for Building and Grounds, Finance, Evangelism, Kitchen, Music and Nominating.
Preceded in death by her parents and husband, she is survived by, a niece, Ann Sappington of Dallas, Texas; a nephew Steve Sappington and wife Anna and their children, Wil Richard Sappington, Ruth Marie Sappington and Sara Jean Sappington of Waco, Texas; a sister-in-law, Margie Clyma and husband Wayne and nephew, Gary Clyma of Ft. Collins, Colorado; a nephew, Howard Clyma and wife Christy of Pueblo, Colorado; a sister-in-law, Betty Sappington of Georgetown, Texas; a niece, Lisa Preister and husband Dave of Austin, Texas and a cousin, Doris McWilliams of Andrews, Texas and many other relatives and a host of friends and neighbors who were very near and dear to her heart.
Funeral services for Marie Sappington will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, April 2, 2010, at the Trinity Baptist Church with Pastor James Hopkins. Interment will follow at Roselawn Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
