AVANT

Mary Ann (Stroud) Avant, age 75, of Perryton, Texas and formerly of Eldorado, passed away early Monday morning, June 26, 2017, at a Perryton, Texas care center.

Mary was born in Olustee, Oklahoma on January 3, 1942, to J.C. "Jake" and Denise (Randolph) Stroud. A 1959 graduate of Eldorado High School, Mary received her B.S. degree in Education, in July 1972, and completed her Masters of Education in May 1986, from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. On January 19, 1959, she married James Avant and they shared four children in their twenty-five years together. For twenty years, Mary taught Kindergarten through sixth grade, Special Education, Migrant Education and Resource/Content Mastery. Teaching at several locations, Mary spent time at Eldorado, Oklahoma, Pampa, Sanford, Perryton and Tulia, Texas, retiring from teaching in May 2002, to care for her aging parents. On March 31, 2005, Mary suffered a massive stroke, at the age of 63, and moved to Senior Village Nursing Home in Perryton, Texas. Mary was a grandmother and great grandmother, known affectionately as, Nana. She loved studying the Bible, reading, knitting and sewing, but most of all she loved being with her family.

Preceded in death by her parents, her former husband, James Avant on April 4, 1991, one son, Michael Brad Avant, on January 12, 1986, one brother, Joe Curtis Stroud and sister-in-law, Janell Stroud, she is survived by three children, Pamela Chisum and husband Jody of Perryton, Texas, Jamie Steffensen and husband Bentley of Amarillo, Texas and Cary Avant and wife April of Buffalo, Texas; grandchildren, Trevor Chisum and wife Maegan Chisum of Perryton, Texas, Hadley Chisum of Perryton, Texas, Nacole Trammel Coker and Kevin Coker of Blair, Oklahoma, Brodie Steffensen of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Micah Steffensen Robison and Chris Robison of Lavon, Texas, Kelsie Steffensen of Amarillo, Texas, Cara Dawn Avant Fiedler and Larry Fiedler of El Reno, Oklahoma, Andi Avant of Amarillo, Texas and Jada Avant of Canyon, Texas; great grandchildren, Tayla Chisum, Ashlyn Chisum, Kutter Chisum, Macie Chisum, Case Coker, Cade Coker, Kolton Fiedler, Bradley Fielder, Bently Fielder and Oliver Robison along with many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mary Avant will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 29, 2017, at the Corinth Baptist Church with Pastor Ricky Crouch officiating. Interment will follow at the Eldorado Cemetery.

Mary will lie in state at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, in Eldorado, on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and at Corinth Baptist Church on Thursday, June 29, 2017, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. prior to service. The family will greet friends at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, in Eldorado on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, from 5 until 6 p.m.
