Mary Josephine Thornton Bulriss
Mary Josephine Thornton Bulriss was born in San Antonio, Texas on September 22nd, 1936. She was the daughter of Earl and Josephine Underwood. Upon graduating from high school, Mary met and married John W. Thornton, Sr. They spent 27 years together touring the world while John was in the Air Force. They had 4 children, Brenda, John Jr., Tina and Michael. Their family lived in Texas, Italy, California, Germany and was finally stationed in Altus in 1970. Mary lived in Altus from 1970 to 2008. During this time Mary worked for 15 years as a loyal employee for C.R. Anthony 's and Stage. When she wasn't employed, she was a full time homemaker and Mom. In 2001 Mary married Larry Bulriss of Altus. They remained in Altus until Larry's sudden passing in 2007. Mary loved being outdoors and working in the yard with her flowers. Her other hobbies included; swimming, camping, riding motorcycles, and traveling. Mary loved spending time with her family and friends. Her greatest joy was having family get-togethers during the holidays with her 4 children and spouses, 10 grandchildren and their spouses, and 6 great grandchildren. Mary loved Jesus Christ and attended First United Methodist Church. Mary has gone home to be with our Lord after a brief illness.
She was preceded in death by her late husband Larry Bulriss, her daughter Brenda Groves Barnhart, son-in-law Neal Groves and her parents Josephine and Earl Underwood.
Mary is survived by her son John Thornton, Jr., daughter Tina Barnes and husband Robert, son Michael Thornton and wife Tammy, brother Loyd Seguin and his wife JoAnn, brother Roger Seguin and wife Grace, 10 grandchildren and spouses, 6 great-grandchildren, and many really good friends.
Funeral services are Wednesday, July 13 at 10:00 AM at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Player officiating. Burial will follow at Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
The family will receive guests from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. on Tuesday evening at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
