Mary Kathleen Daffern, age 68, of Altus, passed away Tuesday afternoon, March 24, 2015, at her residence, in Altus.
Mrs. Daffern was born in Wisbech, England on August 21, 1946, to John and Adelaide (Ware) McCarthy. Growing up and attending school in Wisbech, Mary married the love of her life, Gordon Terry Daffern on October 2, 1971, while he was stationed, in England, with the United States Air Force. After their marriage, they spent the next forty-three wonderful years together before her untimely death. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Clovis, New Mexico where Gordon was assigned to Cannon AFB. Over the next several years, they were stationed at Blytheville AFB, Arkansas, Castle AFB, California and finally Altus Air Force Base in January 1995. While at Castle and Altus, Mary was employed as a Head Start Teacher and dearly loved children. In her spare time, Mary enjoyed crocheting, knitting, sewing, reading and watching old movies. One of the highlights in her life, the whole family took a six week tour of Europe and England, in 2014, where they visited Buckingham Palace and saw the Queen.
Preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Gordon McCarthy and Jack McCarthy, she is survived by her husband Gordon, of the home; two sons, Matthew Daffern of Atwater, California and Thomas Daffern and wife Shannon of Tehachapi, California; two grandchildren, Meghan Daffern and Zachary Daffern; two sisters, Pat Fairhurst of England and Jean Harrison and husband Fred of England; her mother-in-law, Lois Daffern of San Antonio, Texas along with many other relatives and friends.
Memorial services for Mary Daffern will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 28, 2015, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Doug Altom officiating. Services are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.
