Obituary for Mary LaVerne Newton
Mary LaVerne Newton, longtime resident of Blair, OK passed away on April 7, 2011 at the age of 90. Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 9 at the First Baptist Church, 420 Hughes, Blair, OK with interment to follow at Restlawn Cemetery in Altus. The family will be greeting friends at the church before the service. Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus is in charge of arrangements.
LaVerne, the oldest of eleven children, was born July 18, 1920, to Bolie and Nell Williams in Leagueville,Texas. She received her Bachelors degree from Hardin-Simmons in Abilene, Texas and later a Masters degree from Southwest OSU in Weatherford, OK.
LaVerne spent 33 years in education and retired in 1982 after teaching Blair "third graders" for 22 years. Her greatest honor was in 1975 when she was selected as "Jackson County Teacher of the Year". In 2003, she was presented a lifetime membership to the Quartz Mountain Golf Course at which she had been a member for 43 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard Newton in 1974; and four brothers, Banks, Herbert, Bolie Jr. and Jack Williams.
LaVerne is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Charlie and Nancy Newton; grandson, James Richard Newton; two great granddaughters, Makenzie and Chandler Newton; four sisters, Billie Holloway, Wanda Lacy and her late husband Dr. Edmund Lacy, Molly Carter and husband Kenneth, Ann Brewster and husband Findley; two brothers, Glenn Williams and wife Quieva, Neil Williams and wife Tip; many nieces and nephews and a host of loyal friends.
The support and compassion of friends, the devotion and care of the Buckners and the staff at Legends Assisted Living in Oklahoma City was a blessing for LaVerne and her family.
