Obituary for Maude Marie Russell
Maude Marie Russell, of Stillwater and formerly a resident of Altus for many years, was born September 20, 1912 in Missouri to Daniel Jefferson Scott and Maude Ethel (Paden) Scott and died May 6, 2005 at Renaissance Assisted Living Center, Stillwater, Oklahoma at the age of 92, 7 months and 16 days.
She married Clyde Gillespie Russell on June 1, 1933 in Ironton, MO. They were married by Maude Marie's father Rev. D.J. Scott in the Scott home. On June 1, 1983 Maude Marie and Clyde celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary together at the BSU in Altus.
Maude Marie and Clyde met at Southwestern Missouri Baptist College at Bolivar, MO. The following year she went to school at Hannibal, MO and attended 2 summer terms in the State Teachers College at Warrensburg, MO. She was 19 when she started teaching and taught in Higginsville, MO for 3 years in a one room school house. She had 40 pupils- 37 boys and 3 girls. She boarded with a German family and walked1 1/4 miles to school every day, rain or snow.
Maude Marie was always very active in the First Baptist Church of Altus serving on many committee's, active in the Prayer room Ministry, worked with the Singles group and she started the Coffee House on South Main which evolved into the BSU at the Jr. College. She was chosen All Church Sweetheart. She was a member of Erolethian Club and was instrumental in helping bring artist DeGrazia to Altus for a fund raiser that was quite a success.
Maude Marie and Clyde enjoyed raveling. They attended the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. where the Rev. Billy Graham gave the opening prayer and Bishop Fulton Sheen delivered the message followed with an address by President Carter. They were especially interested in welcoming newcomers to church and Altus opening their home for entertaining often; both truly loved people and were gracious hosts.
Maude Marie and Clyde were selected as Mr. and Mrs Western Trails in Altus and were always wonderful ambassadors for Altus.
Maude Marie is survived by two sons, Dr. Clyde Scott Russell and wife Maggie of Stillwater, Oklahoma and Dr. Rex Daniel Russell and wife Judy of Ft. Smith AR; one sister, Catherine Brent of Klamath Falls, OR, three sister-n-laws, Betty Scott of Mesquite, TX, Elizabeth Clay of Booneville, Mo, and Hilda Russell of N.Y.; four grandchildren, Megan Moody and husband G.T., Kristen Josey and husband Kenny, all from Stillwater, Oklahoma, and Rodney Russell and Wife Rae of Fayetteville, AR. and Randy Russell of Nashville, TN; four great-grandchildren, Daireth Holleymand, Ryan Scott Josey and Kiley Josey, all of Stillwater and Reagan Russell of Tulsa, Oklahoma; nieces, Chloe Hopkins of Klamath Falls, OR. and Lynn Brendlen of Saratoga, CA; nephews, Jeff Brent o Portland, OR Thomas Scott Russell of N.Y. Dr. Stephen Russell of CA. Stephen Clay of Carthage, MO., and Mrs D.J. Scott, her husband, Dr. C.G. Russell, an infant brother and Brother, Ross Scott as well as one niece Kathy Scott Krajea.
Services will be held Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Keith Wiginton officiating under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to The First Baptist Church of Altus, the Altus library or the OSU Foundation or to the Charity of your choice.
A family visitation will be held from 6:30 until 8:00 pm on Monday, May 9, 2005 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
